- Growth Rate
- Shop live corals by growth rate: Moderate Growth Rate Moderate Grows at a steady pace in stable conditions. Leave a little room around it.
- Temperament
- Semi-aggressive(3–6 inches spacing) Temperament Semi-aggressive Can sting nearby corals. Leave a few inches of space around it.

Aquacultured Favia Coral
Favia corals, often called closed brain corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals admired for their fleshy polyps and intricate ridges and grooves that form a brain-like pattern. They come in a variety of colors, including greens, reds, golds, and multi-color combinations. Many Indo-Pacific species long sold under the Favia name are now classified by scientists as Dipsastraea, but "Favia" remains the common name among reef keepers.
If you are shopping for brain coral for sale, a favia coral is a resilient option suited to reef keepers of all experience levels. Its moderate growth rate and compatibility with diverse tank setups make it a versatile choice for aquascaping.
In the wild, Favia species live throughout the Indo-Pacific, typically in sheltered areas along reef slopes and lagoons with moderate water movement and nutrient-rich conditions. They encrust rock and rubble, forming domes or broad mats as they grow, and they settle into a range of light and flow conditions.

Water Chemistry for Favia
Favia are relatively hardy and forgiving of minor parameter swings, but stable conditions deliver the best health, growth, and color. They do well in nutrient-balanced systems, so test regularly and make small adjustments to keep calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium consistent.
Lighting Your Favia Coral
Moderate lighting in the 80–150 PAR range supports the coral's photosynthetic zooxanthellae while avoiding stress or bleaching. Place Favia in the lower to middle sections of the tank, where indirect light resembles their natural reef slope and lagoon habitat. Acclimate gradually to any new lighting to prevent stress or tissue damage. We use a combination of EcoTech Marine Radions and metal halides to promote healthy growth and rich coloration.
Water Flow
Moderate, steady flow keeps the fleshy polyps clean and delivers nutrients, while gentle currents prevent debris from settling without overwhelming the coral. In our aquaculture systems, EcoTech Marine MP pumps, Reef Octopus OCTO Pulse, and Sicce XStream wavemakers create dynamic flow patterns that support long-term health.
What We Feed Our Favia Corals
Favia get much of their energy from their symbiotic zooxanthellae, but supplemental feeding can greatly enhance growth and coloration. Our diet for them includes:
- Royal Flush: our signature phytoplankton blend of Tisochrysis, Rhodomonas, and Tetraselmis
- Fine-particle foods: Reef Roids and Benepets
- Mysis shrimp: offered once or twice a month as a protein boost
Feed 2–3 times a week by broadcast feeding or target feeding with a turkey baster, and pause water flow for 10–15 minutes so the coral can absorb the nutrients.
Coloration and Settling In
Favia coloration holds best with stable water chemistry, balanced moderate lighting, and consistent feeding. Growth is moderate, so expect a new frag to take some time to settle before it begins to expand across its plug.
Common Favia Challenges
- Sweeper tentacles: Favia can extend long sweeper tentacles, often at night, that sting neighboring corals; leave space around the colony
- Bleaching: sudden jumps in light intensity can stress the coral; increase lighting gradually
- Debris accumulation: weak flow lets detritus settle on the fleshy polyps; keep flow moderate and steady
- Parameter swings: Favia forgive minor fluctuations, but ongoing instability slows growth and dulls color
How to Acclimate a Favia Coral Frag
- Temperature: float the bag in your aquarium to equalize temperature.
- Drip acclimation: slowly mix your tank water into the shipping water.
- Lighting: start the frag in a lower-light area and increase exposure gradually.
- Placement: secure it in the lower to middle section of the tank with moderate, steady flow and room away from neighboring corals.
