TSA Beetlejuice Bowerbankii Coral FAQ's

Why does my Beetlejuice Bowerbanki inflate and “puff up” during the evening but stay tighter by day?

Homophyllia bowerbanki is a low-light, twilight-adapted LPS. It expands tissue at night to feed and protect valleys from detritus. Daytime contraction under brighter light is normal. If it never inflates after lights out, PAR is likely too high or flow too direct. Lower PAR to ~80–150, diffuse light, and adjust flow so tissue moves gently, not whipped.

The signature Beetlejuice colors look washed out—how can I restore the bold rings?

This morph holds color best under blue-heavy spectrum with moderate PAR and stable nutrients (NO3 ~5–15 ppm, PO4 ~0.03–0.1). Excess white light and ultra-low nutrients mute pigments. Ramp blue channels, shorten peak whites, and avoid rapid swings in alkalinity. Occasional spot feeding of fine meaty foods improves saturation over weeks. Avoid sudden spectrum changes—adjust over 1–2 weeks.

My Bowerbanki’s tissue is receding from one ridge; how do I stop a slow peel?

First, reduce light by 20–30% and soften flow. Inspect for vermetid snails or sharp rubble abrading tissue; remove offenders. Siphon trapped detritus from valleys. Perform an iodine or antiseptic coral dip, place in lower light, and increase random flow slightly to keep surfaces clean. Maintain stable alk 8–9 dKH and normal nutrients. If damage was from a cut, seal edges with a thin epoxy rim.

How far can its stingers reach, and which neighbors are most at risk?

At night, sweepers can reach 2–3 inches. Give at least that buffer from chalices, favias, and meaty LPS that lose flesh on contact. It tolerates most zoas and encrusting SPS at a distance but can overgrow slow encrusters if placed upstream. Run fresh carbon and maintain good export to reduce chemical stress in mixed tanks.
