Sea Cucumbers are among some of the most efficient sandbed cleaners in the reefing hobby. Sea Cucumbers are distant relatives of sea stars and sea urchins, sporting the same tube feet along the underside of their elongate bodies which they use for locomotion. These animals are primarily detritivores, cruising through the sandbed at night and filtering out small particulate organic matter before excreting the remaining sand back out. Due to their direct ingestion of sand, sea cucumbers are extremely efficient at cleaning large volumes over a short period of time. It should be noted that during the day, many species of sea cucumber will hide in, underneath or between rockwork for protection and may not be seen.

About the Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber
The Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber is named for its long, tapering body, which is tan to orange with darker bands and pale, bumpy papillae. It stretches out to feed and contracts when disturbed, so its apparent size changes considerably from day to night.
Tank Requirements
A large, established sand bed at least 2 inches deep is essential, since this cucumber feeds by processing sand for organic material. Newly set-up tanks and bare-bottom systems do not provide enough food.
Cover pump intakes and overflow openings with guards. A cucumber that is pulled into a pump can release toxins that harm fish.
Diet and Feeding
The Tiger Tail Cucumber eats detritus, bacteria, and microorganisms from the sand. In very clean or lightly stocked tanks, place sinking pellets or powdered foods on the sand near it once or twice per week. A cucumber that steadily shrinks is not finding enough food.
Temperament and Tankmates
This cucumber is completely peaceful and compatible with most reef fish and invertebrates. Avoid puffers, triggerfish, and fish known to pick at slow-moving invertebrates.
Reef Compatibility
The Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber is reef safe. Its sand sifting helps keep the substrate clean and aerated without disturbing corals.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Drip acclimate slowly. Sea cucumbers are sensitive to sudden salinity changes. Invertebrates are highly sensitive to copper, and copper-treated water or medications should never be added to an aquarium that houses them.
Common Considerations
-
Guard pumps and overflows: Injured cucumbers can release toxins into the water.
-
Keep activated carbon on hand: Running fresh carbon helps if a cucumber becomes stressed or injured.
-
Needs a mature sand bed: Established sand is its main food source.
-
Watch for shrinking: Steady shrinking means it needs supplemental food.
