FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

Will a Tassled Filefish eat my coral, and which corals are most at risk?

Yes—most Tassled Filefish will nip at or fully consume soft corals and LPS, and many also pick at zoanthids, clove polyps, xenia, and fleshy Euphyllia. They’re especially risky in reef tanks because they naturally graze on coral tissue, polyps, and associated invertebrates. Even “reef-safe” individuals can suddenly start picking once settled in, so they’re best treated as coral predators, not coral-safe fish.

What do I feed a Tassled Filefish if I’m keeping it in captivity?

A mixed meaty diet is essential, with a strong emphasis on small live or frozen foods at first: enriched mysis, chopped shrimp, krill, clam, squid, copepods, and finely diced seafood. Many specimens also take prepared foods like frozen marine blends and sometimes pellets once trained. Frequent small feedings are usually better than one large meal, and offering food near natural picking surfaces often helps shy individuals start eating.

Is a Tassled Filefish safe with ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails?

Not reliably. Tassled Filefish are opportunistic hunters and will often eat very small shrimp, tiny crabs, tube worms, feather dusters, and other delicate inverts if they can fit them in their mouth. Larger snails and robust crabs are less likely to be targeted, but they can still be harassed or picked at. If you want to keep ornamental invertebrates, this fish is a poor choice.

What tank size and aquascape does a Tassled Filefish need to thrive?

They do best in a spacious marine setup with lots of rockwork, hiding spots, and natural grazing surfaces. A mature tank is important because they are often shy at first and need stable water quality. The aquascape should include caves and overhangs, but still leave open swimming room. Since they can be slow and deliberate feeders, a tank with peaceful tankmates is usually better than an aggressive mixed community.

Why is my Tassled Filefish refusing food or staying hidden, and how do I get it eating?

This species is notorious for being stressed during transport and acclimation, and many individuals arrive thin or reluctant to feed. They often hide for days and may ignore dry food until they feel secure. Best results usually come from a very quiet tank, dim lighting at first, live or moving frozen foods, and feeding in the same area each time. Avoid aggressive tankmates, as bullying often suppresses feeding. If it still won’t eat after acclimation, it may need live foods and very stable water conditions before transitioning to prepared foods.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Tassled Filefish (Chaetodermis penicilligerus) is a uniquely camouflaged marine fish recognized for its shaggy appearance, mottled coloration, and flowing tassel-like appendages that help it blend into reef structures and algae-covered environments. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, lagoons, and coastal rubble zones, this species relies heavily on camouflage and slow, deliberate movement to avoid predators.

Unlike many fast-moving reef fish, Tassled Filefish spend much of their time hovering slowly through rockwork and coral structures while searching for small invertebrates and benthic prey. Their unusual appearance and personality make them a highly interesting species for experienced aquarists.

Care Requirements

Care Level: Moderate to Advanced – Requires careful feeding and peaceful tank conditions
Minimum Tank Size: 75+ gallons
Aquarium Setup: Established aquarium with mature rockwork, calm hiding areas, and moderate flow

Tassled Filefish appreciate aquariums with natural rock structures, caves, and areas where they can blend into their surroundings. They are generally slow-moving fish that benefit from low-stress environments.

Diet & Nutrition

Tassled Filefish are carnivorous feeders that consume small benthic invertebrates and meaty foods in the wild.

Diet: Carnivore – Requires varied meaty foods
Recommended Foods:

  • Mysis shrimp
  • Finely chopped seafood
  • Clam and shrimp meat
  • Frozen carnivore blends
  • Enriched brine shrimp

Some specimens may initially be hesitant to accept prepared foods and may require patience during acclimation. Frequent feeding with a varied diet helps maintain healthy body weight.

Lifespan & Growth Rate

Lifespan: 5–8 years
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate

With stable conditions and consistent nutrition, Tassled Filefish can become hardy long-term aquarium inhabitants.

Temperament & Compatibility

Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive – Generally calm but may nip at certain invertebrates
Reef Safe? No (with caution)

Tassled Filefish may nip at soft corals, polyps, feather dusters, tube worms, and small ornamental invertebrates. Individual behavior varies significantly between specimens.

They are best housed with peaceful to moderately active tank mates that will not outcompete them during feeding.

Common Challenges & Considerations

Feeding Difficulties:
Some individuals can be slow to accept prepared foods after importation.

Coral & Invertebrate Nipping:
May graze on soft-bodied invertebrates and coral polyps in reef aquariums.

Timid Behavior:
Aggressive tank mates may stress this species and reduce feeding activity.

Camouflage Behavior:
Their cryptic coloration and slow movement often cause them to blend into the aquascape surprisingly well.

Water Conditions

Temperature: 75–77°F
dKH (Alkalinity): 8–9
pH: 8.1–8.3
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026

Stable water chemistry, low stress levels, and consistent feeding are important for maintaining healthy weight and long-term success with Tassled Filefish.
