FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What size tank does a Steinitz Goby need?

A 10-gallon aquarium is the minimum for an adult. The bottom should be covered in sand or a sand and shell mix deep enough for the fish to excavate a burrow.

Is the Steinitz Goby reef safe?

Yes. It does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates, and it forms a beneficial burrow-sharing partnership with pistol shrimp of the genus Alpheus.

Does the Steinitz Goby need a lid on the tank?

Yes. This species is a known jumper, so a secure, tight-fitting lid is necessary on any aquarium housing it.

Description

The Steinitz Goby is a peaceful, reef-friendly shrimp goby appreciated for its subtle coloration, interesting behavior, and natural symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp. Its pale cream to yellow-white body is marked by several reddish-brown vertical bars, with delicate yellow-orange accents and small spots along the fins. Rather than spending the day swimming in open water, this saltwater fish typically remains close to the substrate, watching the aquarium from the entrance of its burrow.

Amblyeleotris steinitzi, also known as Steinitz’ Prawn Goby, is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to Samoa and north toward the Ryukyu Islands. In nature, it inhabits sandy areas of lagoons, reef slopes, and seaward reefs, where it commonly shares a burrow with an alpheid pistol shrimp. Adults can reach approximately 5 inches, although many specimens remain smaller.

Its peaceful temperament, modest space requirements, and compatibility with corals make it an excellent marine aquarium fish for established reef systems. When paired with a compatible pistol shrimp, the goby and shrimp may establish the classic partnership in which the shrimp maintains the burrow while the goby remains alert for potential danger.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to Samoa and the western Pacific
Scientific Name: Amblyeleotris steinitzi

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature marine aquarium with a sand substrate and areas of small rubble or broken shell where the goby can establish a burrow. In its natural habitat, this species occurs over sandy or sandy-mud bottoms near coral reefs and commonly lives alongside a burrowing pistol shrimp.

A sand bed of approximately 2–3 inches works well for most aquarium setups. Adding a few small pieces of rubble around potential burrow locations can help a paired shrimp reinforce its tunnel system.

Rockwork should provide additional shelter without completely covering the substrate. Place larger rocks securely so burrowing activity cannot undermine unstable structures.

A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is strongly recommended. Like many gobies, this species can jump when startled, especially during introduction or territorial disputes.

Diet and Feeding

The Steinitz Goby is a carnivore that feeds on small crustaceans and other appropriately sized animal foods.

Offer enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped krill, copepods, small frozen marine blends, and quality sinking or slow-sinking carnivore pellets.

Food should reach the lower portion of the aquarium because this goby normally remains close to its burrow rather than competing aggressively in the upper water column. One or two small feedings per day are generally appropriate.

Newly introduced specimens may be shy during feeding, so directing food near the burrow entrance can help ensure they receive enough nutrition.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Steinitz Goby is generally peaceful and works well in community reef aquariums with other non-aggressive marine fish.

Suitable tankmates include clownfish, cardinalfish, firefish, blennies, peaceful wrasses, and other small to medium-sized reef fish. Avoid large predatory species or extremely aggressive bottom-dwellers that may intimidate the goby.

A compatible pistol shrimp can make an especially interesting companion. In nature, Amblyeleotris steinitzi is commonly found living in association with alpheid shrimp.

Multiple shrimp gobies may become territorial around burrows, so adequate substrate space and separate territories should be provided if more than one is maintained.

Reef Compatibility

The Steinitz Goby is considered reef safe.

It does not normally damage corals, clams, or established ornamental invertebrates. Its activity is concentrated around the substrate and burrow entrance, making it well suited to mixed reefs, SPS systems, LPS aquariums, and soft coral displays.

When paired with a pistol shrimp, some sand and small rubble may be moved around the burrow. Corals positioned directly on loose substrate should therefore be placed securely.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable salinity and consistently good water quality. Stability is more important than targeting one exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Burrowing habitat: Provide sand and small rubble so the goby can establish a secure retreat.
  • Pistol shrimp partnership: This species naturally forms a symbiotic association with alpheid shrimp.
  • Peaceful behavior: Best maintained with calm reef-community fish rather than aggressive predators.
  • Jumping risk: A secure mesh lid or fitted aquarium cover is recommended.
  • Bottom feeding: Ensure food reaches the goby near its burrow, particularly while it is acclimating.
