FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

Can a Spotted Coral Grouper be kept in a typical home reef aquarium?

No. It reaches roughly 49 inches, requires a minimum of 600 gallons as an adult, and is unsuitable for reef systems because of its predatory nature and size.

What tankmates are suitable?

Only larger, even-tempered fishes too big to fit in the grouper's mouth. Keep a single grouper per aquarium, as small fishes and crustaceans will be eaten.

What should it be fed in captivity?

Offer enriched meaty foods roughly every other day, reflecting a natural diet dominated by fish. Reluctant new arrivals often accept live shrimp, blackworms, brine shrimp, or fiddler crabs first.

The Spotted Coral Grouper, Plectropomus maculatus, is a spectacular large predatory marine fish known for its elongated body, powerful build, and dense covering of brilliant blue spots. Base coloration can range from red and reddish-brown to olive, gray, or dark brown depending on age, condition, and surroundings. The numerous blue spots extending across the head, body, and fins create the vivid appearance associated with the coral trout group.

Native to the Western Pacific, Plectropomus maculatus occurs from parts of Southeast Asia through Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Australia. It is most often associated with protected coastal and inshore reefs containing a mixture of coral, rock, rubble, and algae. Juveniles frequently remain close to shallow reef structure, while larger fish become formidable predators capable of taking sizable fish and crustaceans.

With a maximum adult length approaching 49 inches, the Spotted Coral Grouper is a substantial saltwater fish requiring an exceptionally large marine aquarium. Its impressive coloration and confident predatory behavior make it a dramatic centerpiece for specialized predator displays, but its eventual size and feeding habits make it unsuitable for conventional community reef aquariums.

Tank Requirements

The Spotted Coral Grouper requires an exceptionally large aquarium with extensive horizontal swimming room and substantial rockwork. Provide large caves, ledges, and overhangs where the fish can retreat while maintaining broad open areas for movement and feeding.

Rock structures should be extremely stable. As this grouper develops into a large, muscular adult, loosely positioned rocks and decorations can easily be displaced during normal swimming or feeding activity.

A sand substrate is appropriate, although bare-bottom systems can also work well in predator-focused aquariums where ease of waste removal is a priority. The species does not require a specialized substrate.

Powerful biological and mechanical filtration, efficient protein skimming, strong oxygenation, and consistent water changes are essential. A large carnivorous grouper consumes substantial amounts of protein-rich food and can create a considerable biological load.

Long-term aquarium planning is critical. Juveniles may appear manageable when offered for sale, but this species can eventually exceed four feet in total length and should be housed with its adult dimensions in mind from the beginning.

Diet and Feeding

The Spotted Coral Grouper is an obligate carnivore that naturally feeds on fish, crustaceans, squid, and other suitable marine prey.

Captive specimens should receive a varied selection of high-quality marine foods including shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, scallop, krill, and appropriately sized pieces of marine fish. Mysis shrimp and smaller chopped seafood are suitable for juveniles, while progressively larger food items can be offered as the fish grows.

A varied seafood-based diet is preferable to relying heavily on one food item. Juveniles can receive smaller meals more frequently, while established adults can generally be fed substantial meals several times per week according to body condition.

Routine feeding of live feeder fish is unnecessary and should be avoided. Prepared marine seafood provides better control over nutrition while reducing the risk of introducing parasites or inappropriate freshwater-based foods.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Spotted Coral Grouper is a powerful predator and should be housed only with tankmates too large to be swallowed. Even fish that coexist successfully with a juvenile may become prey as the grouper's mouth and body size increase.

Suitable companions can include appropriately sized large tangs, triggerfish, large angelfish, rabbitfish, robust wrasses, and other substantial marine predators or semi-aggressive fish. Tankmates should be chosen according to their adult size as well as their ability to compete during feeding.

Small clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, chromis, anthias, damselfish, and other community-sized fish should be considered potential prey. Ornamental shrimp and many crabs are also at significant risk.

This species is naturally solitary and is generally best maintained as the only Plectropomus grouper unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and specifically designed for multiple large predators.

Reef Compatibility

The Spotted Coral Grouper is reef safe with caution. It does not normally consume healthy coral tissue, so established coral colonies can potentially be maintained with the fish in an adequately sized system.

The primary concern is predation rather than coral feeding. Small and medium-sized fish, ornamental shrimp, crabs, and other suitably sized mobile invertebrates may be consumed.

Its exceptional adult size also creates a physical risk to aquascaping. Large specimens can accidentally dislodge unsecured corals or rockwork while swimming, turning, or pursuing food. It is therefore best suited to a specialized predator reef or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium rather than a conventional mixed community reef.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable salinity, excellent oxygenation, powerful filtration, and consistently low accumulated waste are especially important for such a large predatory fish. Prioritize stability and water quality rather than attempting to maintain exact parameter values.

Common Considerations

  • Exceptional adult size: This species can approach 49 inches and requires a truly massive aquarium for permanent housing.

  • Strong predatory instinct: Fish and crustaceans small enough to swallow should always be considered potential prey.

  • Heavy biological load: Large specimens require oversized filtration, efficient protein skimming, and disciplined aquarium maintenance.

  • Juveniles are deceptive: Small specimens grow into extremely large, powerful predators, so permanent housing must be planned before purchase.

  • Secure aquascaping: Large adults can easily disturb loosely positioned rocks, coral colonies, and aquarium decorations.
