New fish are often the source of infectious diseases that can wipe out an entire aquarium. The Safety Stop fish dip is a proactive step that helps lower the risk of introducing those diseases with every new addition.
When to Use Safety Stop
There is no substitute for extended marine fish quarantine in a separate hospital tank. When that is not possible or practical, Safety Stop gives you a basic safety measure before introducing new fish into your main aquarium, or before they go into your quarantine tank.
How to Use Safety Stop
- Get fish home quickly. Take fish from the store directly home without delay, and acclimate them to the same temperature and pH as your aquarium.
- Prepare two baths. While the fish acclimate, add one gallon of water taken directly from the aquarium into each of two clean, non-metallic containers (a plastic or glass bucket). Monitor both for temperature changes.
- Add the treatments. Cut the edge of the packages with scissors, pour PART A into the first container and PART B into the second, and gently agitate both with an air stone. Leave the air stones running to oxygenate the water during treatment.
- Bath A. Move the fish from the acclimation water into PART A for 45 minutes (30 minutes if the fish has been shipped overnight within the last 72 hours). Keep a loose cover on the bath so the fish cannot jump out, and watch for signs of stress such as heavy breathing, erratic swimming, or rolling. If stress appears, shorten the time and move the fish immediately into PART B.
- Bath B. Transfer the fish to PART B for 45 minutes while continuing to watch for stress. If signs of stress occur, remove the fish early and transfer it to a quarantine tank or prepared aquarium. When treatment B is over, net the fish into the aquarium. Do not put bath water into the aquarium.
- Introduce and observe. Watch that tank mates are not harassing the new fish. Feeding the tank at the same time helps keep resident fish occupied. Keep light levels low for 24 hours after introduction.
