FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

How large should the aquarium be for a Royal Flasher Wrasse?

Plan on a 75-gallon aquarium or larger for adults, prioritizing open swimming length and generous rockwork. Judge a system by its usable swimming space, tankmates, and the size of the social group rather than volume alone.

Is the Royal Flasher Wrasse safe for a reef aquarium?

Yes. It is rated reef-compatible and coral-safe, and its natural diet consists of zooplankton rather than coral tissue, so it poses no threat to stony or soft corals.

Can more than one Royal Flasher Wrasse be kept together?

A pair or a single male with several females works best and mirrors the wild social structure. Avoid housing multiple mature males or similar-looking flasher wrasses together unless the system offers substantial space and hiding places.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Royal Flasher Wrasse, Paracheilinus angulatus, is a brilliantly colored saltwater fish known for its vivid orange to reddish body accented by multiple violet, red, and blue horizontal stripes. Mature males develop especially intense coloration and distinctive angular extensions to the rear portions of the dorsal and anal fins. Unlike many other flasher wrasses, males lack the long dorsal filaments commonly associated with the genus. During courtship and territorial displays, their colors can intensify dramatically, producing the rapid “flashing” behavior that makes these wrasses so appealing in reef aquariums.

Native to the Western Central Pacific, particularly the Philippines and northern Indonesia, this species inhabits sheltered coastal and offshore reefs with coral, algae, and rubble. Royal Flasher Wrasses naturally occur in small mixed-sex groups and spend much of the day swimming above the reef while feeding on zooplankton. Their compact adult size, peaceful temperament, active behavior, and excellent reef compatibility make them highly desirable marine aquarium fish for established reef and peaceful fish-only aquariums.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Planktivore / Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Philippines and Northern Indonesia, Western Central Pacific
Scientific Name: Paracheilinus angulatus

Tank Requirements

The Royal Flasher Wrasse should be maintained in an established saltwater aquarium with ample open swimming space and substantial rockwork for security. Adults reach approximately 3 inches, but their active swimming behavior makes a 55-gallon or larger aquarium appropriate for long-term housing.

Arrange live rock to provide caves, overhangs, and narrow crevices where the wrasse can retreat when frightened and rest at night. Unlike sand-burying wrasses, Paracheilinus species normally shelter within reef structure and do not require a deep sand bed.

Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are ideal. Open areas above and around the rockwork allow natural swimming and display behavior.

A tightly fitted mesh or solid aquarium cover is essential. Flasher wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers and can escape through very small openings around plumbing, cables, and aquarium equipment.

Diet and Feeding

The Royal Flasher Wrasse is primarily a planktivore that naturally feeds on tiny crustaceans and other zooplankton suspended above the reef.

Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen plankton blends, and appropriately sized marine pellets. Small foods distributed through the water column encourage natural feeding behavior.

Two to three smaller meals per day are preferable when practical. Mature reef aquariums containing naturally occurring copepods and other microfauna can provide additional feeding opportunities between prepared meals.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Royal Flasher Wrasse is generally peaceful and mixes well with other non-aggressive marine fish. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, anthias, peaceful tangs, fairy wrasses, and other community-oriented species.

Males may display toward other flasher wrasses, particularly similarly colored males. This behavior is usually visual rather than highly aggressive when sufficient swimming space and shelter are available.

The species naturally occurs in small groups, and a single male may be maintained with females in a sufficiently spacious aquarium. Avoid housing multiple mature males together in confined systems where territorial competition may become persistent.

Highly aggressive tankmates should be avoided because they may intimidate this relatively peaceful wrasse or prevent it from feeding normally.

Reef Compatibility

The Royal Flasher Wrasse is considered reef safe. It does not normally damage healthy corals and is generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other common reef invertebrates.

Its feeding behavior is concentrated primarily on tiny planktonic organisms in the water column rather than larger benthic invertebrates. Naturally occurring copepods and other microcrustaceans may be consumed as part of its normal diet.

Its combination of coral safety, peaceful temperament, and compact adult size makes it particularly well suited to established mixed and coral-dominated reef aquariums.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers. Maintain consistent temperature and salinity along with good oxygenation, dependable filtration, and regular aquarium maintenance.

Common Considerations

  • Exceptional jumping risk: A tightly fitted aquarium cover is essential, including protection around plumbing and equipment openings.

  • Distinctive male fins: Mature males develop angular posterior portions of the dorsal and anal fins rather than the long dorsal filaments found on many other flasher wrasses.

  • No deep sand bed required: This species normally sleeps and shelters within rockwork instead of burying itself in the substrate.

  • Display coloration: Mature males can intensify dramatically in color when courting females or displaying toward other wrasses.

  • Frequent feeding preferred: Multiple smaller meals of appropriately sized planktonic and protein-rich foods help maintain healthy body condition.
