FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
What tank size and equipment should I have ready for an adult?
Plan on at least 75 gallons with open swimming room and rock crevices for shelter. A tight-fitting lid or gap-free canopy is essential, since this wrasse is a proven jumper.
Is the Pink Margin Fairy Wrasse safe for a reef with ornamental invertebrates?
Yes. It is coral safe and does not bother sessile invertebrates, though very small ornamental shrimp and similar crustaceans may occasionally be picked at and should be monitored.
What should I feed it, and how often?
Offer enriched mysis and brine shrimp, finely chopped marine meats such as clam, squid, or shrimp, and quality marine flakes or pellets in two to three small meals daily. Verify that a new specimen is already accepting prepared foods before purchase.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Red Margin Fairy Wrasse is a striking, active saltwater fish prized for its vibrant coloration and generally peaceful disposition. Adult males develop rich pink to reddish body coloration accented by fine red spotting, contrasting yellow facial markings, and pronounced red margins along the fins. During social or courtship displays, males can intensify and rapidly shift their coloration, making them especially impressive centerpiece fish in a well-lit marine aquarium.
Cirrrhilabrus rubrimarginatus is native to the western Pacific, with a broad distribution that includes areas from southern Japan through Indonesia and eastward toward Fiji. In nature, mature males are often associated with deeper outer reef habitats, where they swim above reef structure feeding on small planktonic organisms. Their constant movement, bright coloration, and relatively manageable adult size make them highly desirable marine aquarium fish for both reef aquariums and peaceful fish-only systems.
Like other fairy wrasses, this species appreciates plenty of swimming room combined with secure rockwork for retreat. It is generally coral-safe and compatible with many community reef fish, although careful planning is recommended when mixing it with other fairy wrasses.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Pacific, including Japan, Indonesia, and Fiji
Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus rubrimarginatus
Tank Requirements
Provide an established marine aquarium with a combination of open swimming space and substantial rockwork. Caves, ledges, and crevices give the wrasse secure places to retreat when startled and to shelter during the night.
Because adult males can approach 5 inches and remain highly active throughout the day, a longer aquarium with ample horizontal swimming room is preferable. A sand bed is not required for sleeping because fairy wrasses generally shelter within rockwork rather than burying themselves.
A tightly fitted lid or fine-mesh aquarium cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are accomplished jumpers and can leave an uncovered aquarium when startled, chased, or during energetic social displays.
Diet and Feeding
The Red Margin Fairy Wrasse is primarily a carnivorous planktivore that naturally feeds on small zooplankton and crustaceans in the water column.
In captivity, offer a varied diet including enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen marine blends, and appropriately sized marine pellets or flakes.
Small meals two to three times per day are ideal when practical. Regular feeding is particularly important for active fairy wrasses because they spend much of the day swimming and searching for food.
Temperament and Tankmates
This species is generally peaceful and is well suited to established community reef aquariums. Suitable companions include peaceful tangs, anthias, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, smaller angelfish, and other appropriately sized marine species.
Adult males may display territorial or dominance behavior toward other fairy wrasses, especially species with similar coloration or body shape. Providing adequate space and introducing multiple compatible wrasses carefully can reduce aggression.
A male may also be maintained with compatible female fairy wrasses in sufficiently large aquariums, although social dynamics should be monitored closely.
Reef Compatibility
The Red Margin Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe and does not normally damage corals, clams, or other sessile reef organisms.
Its natural feeding behavior is directed primarily toward small planktonic organisms in the water column rather than coral tissue or larger ornamental invertebrates. Established shrimp, snails, and other typical reef inhabitants are generally ignored.
This makes the species an excellent candidate for mixed reefs as well as SPS, LPS, and soft coral aquariums.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 74–78°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable water quality is particularly important during acclimation. Avoid rapid changes in temperature, salinity, or pH, and prioritize consistent conditions over targeting a single exact value.
Common Considerations
- Excellent jumper: A secure mesh lid or tightly fitted aquarium cover is essential.
- Active adult male: Provide generous horizontal swimming room in addition to sheltered rockwork.
- Wrasse compatibility: Adult males may become assertive toward other fairy wrasses, especially similarly colored species.
- Frequent feeding: Multiple small meals help maintain body condition and coloration.
- Acclimation: Newly introduced specimens may initially be shy and spend time hiding before becoming confident in the aquarium.
