All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The male Purple Velvet Fairy Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus luteovittatus, is a beautifully colored saltwater fish prized for its rich purple, magenta, red, and yellow tones. Mature males develop substantially more intense coloration than females, with a deep violet to purplish body, contrasting reddish and yellow markings, and vividly colored fins that can become even brighter during courtship or territorial displays. Its graceful swimming behavior and dramatic mature coloration make it an exceptional addition to a peaceful reef aquarium.
Native to the central-western Pacific, particularly the Marshall Islands and Caroline Islands, this species inhabits lagoon patch reefs and coral-and-rubble environments. Small groups typically swim above the reef while feeding on zooplankton suspended in the water column. With an adult size of approximately 4.5–5 inches, peaceful temperament, and excellent compatibility with corals and ornamental invertebrates, the Purple Velvet Fairy Wrasse is a highly desirable marine aquarium fish for established reef aquariums and peaceful fish-only systems.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Planktivore / Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Marshall Islands and Caroline Islands, Central-Western Pacific
Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus luteovittatus
Tank Requirements
The Purple Velvet Fairy Wrasse should be maintained in an established marine aquarium with ample open swimming room and substantial rockwork for shelter. A 55-gallon or larger aquarium provides suitable long-term space for its adult size and active swimming behavior.
Arrange live rock to create caves, overhangs, and narrow crevices where the fish can retreat when startled and rest at night. Unlike sand-burying wrasses, Cirrhilabrus species normally shelter within reef structure, so a deep sand bed is not required.
Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are ideal. Open areas above and around the rockwork allow the fish to display its natural swimming and plankton-feeding behavior.
A tightly fitted mesh or solid aquarium cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are accomplished jumpers and can escape through very small openings around plumbing, cables, and equipment.
Diet and Feeding
The Purple Velvet Fairy Wrasse is primarily a planktivore and naturally feeds on zooplankton suspended above the reef.
Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, frozen plankton blends, and appropriately sized high-quality marine pellets. Small foods distributed through the water column encourage natural feeding behavior.
Two to three smaller meals per day are preferable when practical. Established reef aquariums containing naturally occurring copepods and other microfauna can provide additional feeding opportunities between prepared meals.
Temperament and Tankmates
The male Purple Velvet Fairy Wrasse is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and works well in a community-oriented reef aquarium. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, anthias, peaceful tangs, flasher wrasses, and compatible fairy wrasses.
Mature males may display toward other fairy wrasses, particularly males with similar coloration or body shape. This behavior is often visual rather than highly aggressive when adequate swimming space and shelter are available.
A male can be maintained singly or with compatible females in a sufficiently spacious aquarium. Avoid highly aggressive tankmates that may continually intimidate the wrasse or prevent it from feeding comfortably.
Reef Compatibility
The Purple Velvet Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe. It does not normally damage healthy corals and is generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other common reef invertebrates.
Its natural feeding behavior is focused primarily on tiny planktonic organisms suspended in the water column rather than larger benthic invertebrates. Naturally occurring copepods and other microcrustaceans may be consumed as part of normal feeding behavior.
Its combination of peaceful temperament, active swimming behavior, and excellent coral compatibility makes it particularly well suited to mixed and coral-dominated reef aquariums.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers. Maintain consistent temperature and salinity along with good oxygenation, dependable filtration, and regular aquarium maintenance.
Common Considerations
-
Mature male coloration: Adult males develop deeper purple, magenta, red, and yellow coloration than females and initial-phase individuals.
-
Display behavior: Color intensity can increase dramatically when the male is courting or interacting with other fairy wrasses.
-
Exceptional jumping risk: A tightly fitted aquarium cover is essential, including around plumbing and equipment openings.
-
No deep sand bed required: This fairy wrasse normally sleeps and shelters within rockwork rather than burying itself in the substrate.
-
Frequent feeding preferred: Multiple smaller meals of planktonic and protein-rich marine foods help maintain strong body condition and coloration.
