Purple Tang

The Purple Tang is one of the most recognizable and desirable surgeonfish in the marine aquarium hobby, prized for its rich violet-blue body, contrasting yellow tail, and intricate dark patterning across the face and flanks. Native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean, Zebrasoma xanthurum inhabits coral-rich reef environments where it spends much of the day grazing on algae.

This active saltwater fish makes an outstanding centerpiece for larger reef aquariums and fish-only aquariums. While hardy once established, the Purple Tang has a bold, territorial temperament and requires ample swimming space, mature rockwork, and a consistent herbivore-focused diet. Its combination of vivid coloration, active behavior, and natural algae-grazing habits makes it especially appealing in well-established marine displays.

Tank Requirements

Provide a spacious aquarium with a long swimming footprint, abundant open water, and well-established live rock. Purple Tangs are active swimmers but also spend considerable time grazing over rock surfaces, so the aquascape should balance open swimming lanes with caves and sheltered areas.

Strong filtration, good oxygenation, and moderate to strong water movement are recommended. Mature live rock can provide additional natural grazing opportunities and help newly introduced specimens settle into the aquarium.

A secure lid is advisable, particularly during acclimation or periods of territorial conflict. Because this species can become increasingly dominant as it matures, long-term tankmate planning is important.

Diet and Feeding

The Purple Tang is primarily herbivorous and should receive a diet rich in marine algae and vegetable matter. Offer dried seaweed or nori regularly, ideally from a feeding clip that allows extended grazing.

Supplement algae with high-quality spirulina-based pellets, herbivore flakes, frozen marine herbivore blends, and occasional foods such as mysis shrimp or enriched brine shrimp. A varied diet can help maintain strong coloration and body condition.

Feeding several smaller portions throughout the day is beneficial. Regular access to algae is particularly important because surgeonfish naturally spend much of their waking hours grazing.

Temperament and Tankmates

Purple Tangs are generally confident and territorial, particularly toward other surgeonfish. Aggression is often strongest toward other Zebrasoma species and fish with a similar body shape or feeding niche.

Keeping a single Purple Tang is the simplest option for most aquariums. Multiple tangs are more successfully maintained in very large systems with abundant swimming room, multiple feeding areas, and carefully planned introductions.

Suitable companions include moderately assertive community fish that are unlikely to be intimidated by an active surgeonfish. Very timid species may struggle if housed with an established, dominant individual.

Reef Compatibility

The Purple Tang is considered reef safe and is generally an excellent choice for coral aquariums. It does not typically consume healthy corals, clams, ornamental shrimp, snails, or other common reef invertebrates.

Its natural grazing behavior can also be beneficial in established reef systems by helping control certain types of algae. However, its algae-eating habits should not be considered a replacement for proper aquarium maintenance or nutrient management.
