FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
What size aquarium do adult Ocellaris Clownfish need?
Plan on a minimum of 30 gallons for adult housing, furnished with plenty of live rock. Additional volume helps when keeping a pair or a broader community.
Does an Ocellaris Clownfish need a host anemone?
No. A host anemone allows natural symbiotic behavior, but captive-bred clownfish thrive without one and will adopt a rock, coral, or favored corner of the tank as their territory.
Is the Ocellaris Clownfish safe with corals, shrimp, and snails?
Yes. It is reef safe with soft, LPS, and SPS corals and leaves mobile invertebrates such as cleaner shrimp, hermit crabs, snails, and urchins alone.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Premium Frostbite Clownfish is a striking designer form of the Ocellaris Clownfish, combining extensive white coloration with vibrant orange on the face, fins, and tail, bold black edging, and distinctive dark “buckshot” spotting. As Frostbite Clownfish mature, portions of the white pattern may develop an icy blue cast that gives this variety its signature frosted appearance. Individual patterning varies considerably, making each fish visually distinctive.
Frostbite Clownfish are captive-bred Amphiprion ocellaris. The wild species is native to the Indo-West Pacific, where Ocellaris Clownfish inhabit shallow coral reefs and calm lagoons, often living in association with host anemones. In the marine aquarium, their manageable adult size, bold coloration, engaging behavior, and adaptability make them an excellent choice for both reef aquariums and fish-only aquariums.
Like other Ocellaris Clownfish varieties, the Frostbite is generally easy to maintain and readily accepts prepared aquarium foods. It can be kept singly or as a compatible pair and does not require a host anemone to thrive. Although usually well behaved with unrelated tankmates, established clownfish may become territorial around a favored section of the aquarium.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy
Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Captive Bred; species native to the Indo-West Pacific
Scientific Name: Amphiprion ocellaris
Amphiprion ocellaris reaches approximately 4–4.3 inches in maximum length, and the species naturally occurs from the eastern Indian Ocean through portions of Southeast Asia and the western Pacific.
Tank Requirements
Provide a well-established saltwater aquarium with stable water quality, adequate swimming room, and rockwork that creates sheltered areas and defined territories. Frostbite Clownfish tend to spend much of their time around a preferred section of the aquarium rather than continuously roaming the entire tank.
No specialized substrate is required, making them suitable for sand-bottom, crushed-coral, or bare-bottom systems. Moderate water movement is appropriate, although the fish should have areas where it can retreat from stronger flow. A secure aquarium cover is recommended whenever possible, particularly during acclimation or when introducing new tankmates.
A host anemone is not required for successful long-term care. Clownfish may instead adopt a cave, rock ledge, powerhead area, or occasionally a coral as their preferred territory.
Diet and Feeding
The Premium Frostbite Clownfish is an omnivore that adapts readily to captive feeding. Offer a varied marine diet that includes quality pellets or flakes along with frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and balanced marine frozen blends.
Feed once or twice daily, using portions that can be consumed quickly. Smaller, varied meals help provide balanced nutrition while limiting excess nutrients from uneaten food. Ocellaris Clownfish are generally enthusiastic feeders once acclimated.
Temperament and Tankmates
Frostbite Clownfish are among the more manageable clownfish for community marine aquariums, but they can become territorial as they mature, establish a preferred location, or form a bonded pair. Territorial behavior may become more noticeable around a chosen host area or during spawning.
They are compatible with many appropriately sized marine aquarium fish, including gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, peaceful wrasses, firefish, and numerous other community species. Avoid keeping multiple unrelated clownfish species together in smaller aquariums, as territorial disputes can become severe.
For most home aquariums, keeping a single specimen or a compatible pair is preferable to maintaining a group.
Reef Compatibility
Reef Safe: Yes.
Premium Frostbite Clownfish are suitable for reef aquariums and are not known for consuming corals, clams, ornamental shrimp, snails, or other typical reef invertebrates. They can be maintained with soft corals, LPS corals, and SPS corals.
Some individuals may choose a coral as a substitute host when an anemone is absent. Repeated rubbing or nesting behavior can occasionally irritate sensitive corals even though the fish is not attempting to eat them.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Consistent, stable water quality is more important than attempting to maintain any single parameter at an exact number. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or pH, especially during acclimation.
Common Considerations
-
Unique Patterning: Frostbite coloration and spotting vary naturally from fish to fish; no two specimens should be expected to have identical markings.
-
Territorial Behavior: Established individuals and bonded pairs may defend a chosen section of the aquarium, particularly as they mature.
-
No Anemone Required: A host anemone is optional and is not necessary for the clownfish to remain healthy in captivity.
-
Coral Hosting: Some individuals may adopt corals as a host, which can occasionally irritate sensitive colonies.
-
Adult Size: Ocellaris Clownfish can reach approximately 4 inches or slightly larger, so long-term housing should provide adequate territory and stable water conditions.
