The Polleni Grouper, Cephalopholis polleni, is a spectacular predatory marine aquarium fish distinguished by its unusual yellow to greenish-gold coloration and brilliant blue to violet horizontal striping. Also known as the Harlequin Hind, this striking grouper can display considerable variation in intensity and coloration depending on mood, surroundings, and maturity. Its bold pattern, heavy-bodied profile, and confident behavior make it an impressive centerpiece for a large saltwater aquarium.
Native to scattered oceanic islands throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Comoros eastward toward the Line Islands, Cephalopholis polleni is associated with clear, deeper reef slopes, caves, crevices, and steep drop-offs. In its natural habitat it is typically solitary and often stays close to protective reef structure, occasionally swimming beneath cave ceilings and overhangs.
Reaching approximately 17 inches as an adult, the Polleni Grouper requires substantial long-term swimming room and robust filtration. It is best suited to a large fish-only aquarium or carefully planned predator reef containing appropriately sized tankmates. While generally not interested in corals, its predatory nature makes small fish and ornamental crustaceans unsuitable companions.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Aggressive / Predatory
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-Pacific – scattered oceanic islands from the Comoros to the Line Islands
Scientific Name: Cephalopholis polleni
Tank Requirements
Provide a large, mature saltwater aquarium with substantial rockwork arranged to create deep caves, overhangs, shaded retreats, and secure territories. At the same time, preserve generous open swimming areas so the grouper has enough room to cruise and turn comfortably at adult size.
Because this species naturally occurs around deeper reef slopes and caves, newly introduced specimens may initially favor shaded sections of the aquarium. Providing darker retreats can help the fish settle without forcing it into exposed areas.
Rockwork should be stable and securely positioned. Large groupers are powerful fish capable of disturbing loosely placed rocks, corals, and decorations as they move through the aquarium.
Strong biological filtration, efficient protein skimming, good oxygenation, and consistent maintenance are essential. Adult predatory fish produce a substantial biological load, making adequate filtration and water volume especially important for long-term housing.
Diet and Feeding
The Polleni Grouper is a carnivore that naturally preys on fish and crustaceans. In captivity, offer a varied selection of nutritious marine-origin foods rather than relying on a single food type.
Suitable foods include chopped shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, krill, silversides, pieces of marine fish flesh, and quality frozen carnivore blends. Large marine carnivore pellets may also be accepted by acclimated specimens.
Feed according to body condition and size. Juveniles generally benefit from smaller, more frequent portions, while established adults can typically be fed substantial meals several times per week. Avoid chronic overfeeding, as groupers are enthusiastic feeders and can readily consume more food than necessary.
Routine use of live feeder fish is unnecessary and is not recommended. A varied diet of properly prepared marine foods provides a more appropriate nutritional foundation.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Polleni Grouper is a solitary, predatory fish that can become territorial around preferred caves and reef structures. Although its behavior may appear calm when resting, any tankmate small enough to fit into its mouth should be considered potential prey.
Choose robust tankmates according to their adult size rather than their size at introduction. Suitable companions can include appropriately sized tangs, large angelfish, rabbitfish, larger wrasses, triggerfish, and other substantial predator-community fish with compatible temperaments.
Avoid gobies, blennies, chromis, anthias, cardinalfish, small wrasses, small clownfish, and other species that could eventually be swallowed.
Keeping multiple groupers requires a very large aquarium and careful species selection. For most home aquariums, maintaining a single Polleni Grouper is the safest long-term arrangement.
Reef Compatibility
The Polleni Grouper is reef safe with caution. It does not normally consume healthy coral tissue and can be maintained with many corals in a sufficiently large aquarium.
The primary concern is predation on mobile reef inhabitants. Ornamental shrimp, small crabs, and other crustaceans may be eaten, while any sufficiently small fish is at substantial risk.
Large specimens can also disturb unsecured frags or decorations simply through their movement around the aquarium. For this reason, the species is better considered coral safe rather than universally reef safe and is most appropriate for a predator reef or large fish-only system.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 74–79°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable, well-oxygenated water and avoid abrupt fluctuations in salinity, temperature, or pH. Strong filtration and consistent maintenance are particularly important because of the biological load produced by a large carnivorous fish. Stability is more important than continually adjusting parameters to reach exact numbers.
Common Considerations
-
Adults can reach approximately 17 inches, requiring a large aquarium with substantial swimming room and long-term territory.
-
Any fish small enough to fit into the grouper's mouth should be considered potential prey.
-
Ornamental shrimp and other smaller crustaceans are at significant risk of being eaten.
-
Provide large caves and shaded overhangs, as this species naturally associates with deeper reef structure and crevices.
-
Strong filtration and protein skimming are important for managing the waste produced by a large carnivorous fish.
