Platinum Clownfish

The Platinum Clownfish is a dramatic designer variety of the True Percula Clownfish, prized for its nearly solid white body and bold contrasting coloration. Unlike the traditional three white bars of a wild-type Percula, the Platinum typically displays continuous white coloration from head to tail. As the fish matures, darker black pigmentation develops along the fins, creating a striking contrast against the brilliant white body and orange face. The Platinum variety was developed through selective breeding of Picasso Percula Clownfish.

Beneath its distinctive designer coloration, this fish retains the characteristic behavior and manageable size of Amphiprion percula. The wild species occurs on shallow reefs of the Western Pacific, including Queensland, northern New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, where it lives in close association with host anemones. Captive-bred Platinum Clownfish do not require an anemone and adapt readily to life in a properly maintained marine aquarium.

Its compact adult size, engaging personality, bold coloration, and excellent reef compatibility make the Platinum Clownfish an appealing choice for established reef aquariums and fish-only saltwater aquariums alike.

Tank Requirements

Provide a stable saltwater aquarium with ample rockwork, sheltered areas, and enough open space for comfortable movement. Platinum Clownfish commonly establish a favorite section of the aquarium and may spend much of their time near a cave, rock ledge, coral, or other chosen territory.

No specialized substrate is required, making this species appropriate for sand-bottom or bare-bottom systems. Moderate water movement works well, but areas of lower flow should be available for resting and shelter.

A host anemone is optional rather than necessary. In nature, A. percula associates with host anemones on lagoon and seaward reefs, but captive specimens can thrive without one. A secure aquarium lid is recommended, particularly during acclimation or when introducing new tankmates.

Diet and Feeding

Platinum Clownfish are omnivorous and typically adapt readily to prepared aquarium foods. Offer a varied diet consisting of high-quality marine pellets or flakes supplemented with frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood, and nutritionally complete frozen blends.

Feed once or twice daily in portions appropriate for the fish's size. A varied diet helps support healthy body condition and strong coloration while avoiding excessive reliance on any single food source.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Platinum Clownfish is generally suitable for community marine aquariums but should be considered semi-aggressive due to its territorial behavior. Once established, an individual or bonded pair may defend a preferred cave, coral, rock formation, or host area.

Suitable tankmates include many gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, firefish, peaceful wrasses, and other appropriately sized community marine fish. Avoid housing multiple unrelated clownfish or several clownfish species together in smaller aquariums, as territorial aggression can become significant.

This variety can be kept singly or as a compatible pair. Like other clownfish, A. percula naturally forms a social hierarchy in which the dominant individual becomes the female and the next-largest fish functions as the breeding male.

Platinum Clownfish are excellent candidates for reef aquariums and do not normally prey upon corals, clams, ornamental shrimp, snails, or other common reef invertebrates. They can be maintained with soft corals, LPS corals, SPS corals, and a wide variety of other reef inhabitants.

An anemone is not required for reef aquarium success. In its absence, some clownfish may adopt a coral as a substitute host. Persistent rubbing or nesting within a sensitive coral can occasionally cause irritation even though the fish is not consuming or intentionally damaging the coral.
