FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
What substrate and aquascape does a Pink Spotted Watchman Goby need?
Provide a reasonably deep soft-sand bed, movable coral rubble, secure rockwork, and hiding sites, with open bottom space around the burrow. Seat supporting rocks firmly so excavation cannot destabilize them, and cover the aquarium tightly to prevent jumping.
Is this goby safe for a reef aquarium with ornamental invertebrates?
It does not bother corals or other sessile invertebrates, but very small ornamental shrimp, bristleworms, and pods may be eaten. Its digging can also bury corals placed low on the sand.
Can more than one Pink Spotted Watchman Goby be kept together?
Keep a single specimen in most cases, since conspecifics fight over burrows. A confirmed mated male-female pair can share a burrow, while similar gobies and other bottom dwellers often provoke territorial disputes.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
Pale rosy speckling, a slender body, and an elongated dorsal fin give the Pink Spotted Watchman Goby a slightly serpentine profile. Native to reefs and lagoons in Indonesia, Cryptocentrus leptocephalus usually hovers above its burrow entrance, watching the sand flat for food and danger.
In the wild, it excavates and maintains a burrow, sometimes sharing the tunnel with a pistol shrimp. In an aquarium, it typically remains perched near the entrance instead of swimming through open water. Its manageable adult size suits both fish-only systems and reef displays.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indonesia
Scientific Name: Cryptocentrus leptocephalus
Tank Requirements
Provide enough floor space for a burrow and several centimeters of fine to medium sand. The substrate should allow the goby to dig and shape its tunnel entrance without difficulty. Scattered rubble and shell fragments may be used as building material.
Place at least one solid piece of live rock directly on the tank bottom or an egg crate base, never balanced on loose sand. This prevents rockslides during excavation. Use a tight-fitting lid and close gaps around overflows, plumbing, and light mounts. Moderate flow across the sand is suitable, but don't direct strong flow into the burrow.
Diet and Feeding
A carnivore, the Pink Spotted Watchman Goby naturally eats small invertebrates and zooplankton from the sand and water column. Offer a rotation of mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality pellets.
Because it usually stays close to its burrow, deliver small meals near the entrance two to three times daily. Food should clear within a few minutes to help maintain water quality.
Temperament and Tankmates
It poses no threat to other fish and spends most of its time near its burrow. However, it may become territorial toward similarly sized gobies, especially its own kind. Keep it singly or as a bonded pair, not in a group.
Suitable tankmates include clownfish, blennies, and peaceful wrasses that won't drive it from the burrow. Avoid larger or aggressive fish that may treat it as prey. A harassed goby may retreat, hide, and stop feeding normally. It may pair with Alpheus bellulus or Alpheus randalli, sharing a burrow while the shrimp maintains the tunnel and the goby watches for predators.
Reef Compatibility
It is reef safe and doesn't eat coral tissue or ornamental invertebrates. Burrowing is the main concern, since the goby can move substantial amounts of sand, bury low frags, and shift loose rubble.
Keep valuable corals on raised ledges or racks above the sand line. Secure rockwork so excavation can't undermine it.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 72–78°F
Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Keep these parameters stable and avoid rapid changes.
Common Considerations
- Jumping risk: It may jump when startled or housed with boisterous tankmates. Use a snug, gap-free lid.
- Burrow excavation: Expect ongoing sand movement. Anchor rockwork on the tank bottom and elevate frags to prevent burial.
- Territorial behavior: Keep it singly or as a bonded pair. Unrelated individuals may fight.
- Pistol shrimp pairing: Pairing with a compatible pistol shrimp is possible but not guaranteed. Success depends on tank layout, flow, and timing.
- Feeding placement: Target food near the burrow entrance because the goby rarely forages far from its shelter.
