Orangeback Fairy Wrasse

The Orangeback Fairy Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis, is a brilliantly colored saltwater fish distinguished by its vivid golden-orange back contrasting against a rich magenta, purple, and reddish lower body. Mature males develop especially intense coloration, including a distinctive dark red crown-like marking on the head, while their colors can become even more vibrant during courtship and territorial displays. Its graceful swimming behavior and bold color contrast make it an exceptional addition to a reef aquarium.

Native to Indonesia in the western central Pacific, particularly around Sulawesi and Tomini Bay, this species inhabits reef edges with coral and rubble at moderate depths. It is commonly encountered in small social groups, swimming above the reef while feeding on tiny planktonic organisms. With a relatively compact adult size of approximately 4 inches, peaceful temperament, and excellent compatibility with corals and ornamental invertebrates, the Orangeback Fairy Wrasse is a highly desirable marine aquarium fish for established reef and peaceful fish-only systems.

Tank Requirements

The Orangeback Fairy Wrasse should be maintained in an established aquarium with generous open swimming space and substantial rockwork for shelter. A 90-gallon or larger aquarium provides suitable long-term territory for this active fairy wrasse.

Arrange live rock to create caves, overhangs, and narrow crevices where the fish can retreat when frightened and rest at night. Unlike sand-burying wrasses, Cirrhilabrus species typically sleep within reef structure and do not require a deep sand bed.

Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are ideal.

A tightly fitted lid or mesh aquarium cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers and may escape through surprisingly small openings around plumbing, cables, and equipment.

Diet and Feeding

The Orangeback Fairy Wrasse is primarily a planktivore and naturally feeds on small crustaceans and other planktonic organisms suspended above the reef.

Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen plankton blends, and appropriately sized marine pellets. Foods that remain suspended in the water column encourage natural feeding behavior.

Two to three smaller meals per day are preferable when practical. A mature aquarium containing copepods and other microfauna can provide additional feeding opportunities between prepared meals.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Orangeback Fairy Wrasse is generally peaceful and mixes well with other non-aggressive marine aquarium fish. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, anthias, peaceful tangs, and other community-oriented species.

Some displaying and territorial behavior can occur around other fairy wrasses, particularly males with similar coloration or body shape. Multiple fairy wrasses can be maintained in sufficiently spacious aquariums when species selection and introductions are carefully planned.

Like other Cirrhilabrus species, Orangeback Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning females can transition into males depending on social conditions.

Avoid highly aggressive tankmates that may continually intimidate the wrasse or prevent it from feeding normally.

Reef Compatibility

The Orangeback Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe. It does not normally damage healthy corals and is generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other common reef invertebrates.

Its feeding behavior is concentrated primarily on tiny planktonic organisms in the water column rather than larger benthic invertebrates. Naturally occurring copepods and other very small crustaceans may be consumed as part of its normal diet.

This combination of coral safety and peaceful behavior makes it particularly well suited to established mixed and coral-dominated reef aquariums.
