FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
What size aquarium do adult Ocellaris Clownfish need?
Plan on a minimum of 30 gallons for adult housing, furnished with plenty of live rock. Additional volume helps when keeping a pair or a broader community.
Does an Ocellaris Clownfish need a host anemone?
No. A host anemone allows natural symbiotic behavior, but captive-bred clownfish thrive without one and will adopt a rock, coral, or favored corner of the tank as their territory.
Is the Ocellaris Clownfish safe with corals, shrimp, and snails?
Yes. It is reef safe with soft, LPS, and SPS corals and leaves mobile invertebrates such as cleaner shrimp, hermit crabs, snails, and urchins alone.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Mocha Storm Clownfish is a striking captive-bred designer form of Amphiprion ocellaris, combining rich mocha-brown and warm orange coloration with dramatic, irregular white “storm” patterning. Each individual develops its own distinctive arrangement of white and darker markings, giving this saltwater fish a highly individualized appearance while retaining the familiar body shape and personality of the classic Ocellaris Clownfish. The Mocha Storm lineage was developed from Black Storm and orange Ocellaris clownfish.
Well suited to both reef aquariums and fish-only aquariums, this marine aquarium fish is generally hardy, adaptable, and comfortable without a host anemone. Like other Ocellaris Clownfish, it may establish a preferred area of the aquarium and become more territorial as it matures or forms a bonded pair. The natural species occurs on shallow coral reefs and calm lagoons throughout the Indo-West Pacific, although the Mocha Storm color pattern itself is a captive-bred designer strain rather than a naturally occurring geographic variety.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy
Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Captive-bred designer variety; A. ocellaris is native to the Indo-West Pacific, including Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and northwestern Australia
Scientific Name: Amphiprion ocellaris
Tank Requirements
Provide a well-established saltwater aquarium with stable water quality, open swimming room, and rockwork that creates sheltered areas and visual boundaries. Mocha Storm Clownfish commonly select a particular rock, coral, corner, or other structure as their territory and may spend much of their time close to that area.
A host anemone is not required for this clownfish to thrive in captivity. Ocellaris-type clownfish can live successfully in reef aquariums with or without an anemone present. If an anemone is included, its individual lighting, aquarium maturity, and husbandry requirements should be considered separately.
No specialized substrate is necessary, and moderate reef-style circulation is appropriate as long as calmer areas are available. A secure aquarium cover is also advisable, particularly during acclimation or when territorial interactions are occurring.
Diet and Feeding
The Mocha Storm Clownfish is an omnivore and readily accepts a broad variety of prepared aquarium foods. Captive-bred individuals are commonly conditioned to eat pellets, flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, and frozen brine shrimp. Wild A. ocellaris also consumes small crustaceans, zooplankton, algae, worms, and other available foods.
For balanced nutrition, offer a varied rotation of high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality omnivore frozen blends. Small portions once or twice daily are appropriate for most established adults, while smaller or growing specimens can benefit from more frequent modest feedings.
Temperament and Tankmates
Mocha Storm Clownfish are among the more manageable clownfish varieties and share the generally hardy, relatively peaceful disposition of standard Ocellaris Clownfish. However, mature individuals can become territorial around a chosen host area, especially after pairing or when preparing to spawn.
They can be kept singly or as a compatible pair. When keeping two clownfish together, selecting appropriately sized individuals can help a natural dominance relationship develop. Avoid casually mixing multiple mature clownfish or several established clownfish pairs in smaller aquariums, as territorial aggression can become significant.
Suitable tankmates include many peaceful to moderately assertive reef fish that will not harass or prey upon the clownfish. Additional caution is recommended with other clownfish species, aggressive damselfish, or fish competing for the same confined territory.
Reef Compatibility
The Mocha Storm Clownfish is considered reef safe and is an excellent choice for coral reef aquariums. It does not normally prey on corals, clams, ornamental shrimp, crabs, or snails.
As with other clownfish, an individual may choose a coral as a substitute host when an anemone is absent. Persistent rubbing or nesting behavior can occasionally irritate certain fleshy corals, but this is behavioral interaction rather than deliberate coral feeding.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable, consistent water quality is more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium to chase an exact number within the recommended range.
Common Considerations
-
Individual pattern variation: Storm-pattern clownfish can vary considerably in the distribution of white, mocha, orange, and dark markings, making each specimen visually unique.
-
Adult size: Amphiprion ocellaris can reach approximately 4 inches, with FishBase reporting a maximum total length of 11 cm.
-
Territorial behavior: A mature clownfish or bonded pair may aggressively defend its preferred section of the aquarium.
-
Anemone not required: These captive-bred clownfish can thrive without a host anemone.
-
Pairing requires observation: Newly introduced clownfish should be monitored for excessive chasing or persistent aggression while a dominance hierarchy develops.
