Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse is an elegant and active saltwater fish known for its warm red-orange coloration, graceful swimming style, and striking adult male patterning. Females and juveniles tend to be more uniformly orange-red, while mature males develop stronger contrasting colors, elongated pelvic fins, and vivid blue markings along the dorsal and anal fins. Its manageable adult size and peaceful nature make it an appealing choice for established reef aquariums and carefully planned fish-only marine aquariums.
Cirrrhilabrus katherinae is a reef-associated fairy wrasse native to the western Pacific, with a documented range that includes the Izu Islands of Japan, Guam, and the Mariana Islands. In the wild it occurs around exposed outer reef habitats, where it swims actively above and around reef structure. In captivity, it is best appreciated in an aquarium that provides both open swimming room and secure areas of rockwork for retreat.
Unlike more territorial wrasses, Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse is generally peaceful and well suited to community marine aquariums. It is also considered reef safe, making it especially desirable for aquarists looking for a colorful, active wrasse that does not normally threaten corals or ornamental invertebrates.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 90 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Pacific, including Japan, Guam, and the Mariana Islands
Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus katherinae
Tank Requirements
Provide an established marine aquarium with plenty of open swimming space along with live rock arranged into caves, ledges, and sheltered retreat areas. Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse is an active midwater swimmer and benefits from an aquarium layout that does not crowd the entire tank with rockwork.
A secure lid or tightly fitted mesh cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are excellent jumpers and may launch from the aquarium when startled, chased, or during periods of heightened activity.
A sand bed is not required for sleeping because this species typically shelters within rockwork rather than burying itself. Stable water quality, good oxygenation, and moderate to strong circulation are appropriate for long-term care.
Diet and Feeding
Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse is primarily a carnivorous planktivore that naturally feeds on small drifting organisms and crustaceans.
In captivity, offer a varied diet that includes enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen marine blends, and appropriately sized marine pellets or flakes.
Small feedings two to three times per day are ideal when practical. Fairy wrasses are active fish with relatively high energy demands, so regular feeding helps maintain body condition and strong coloration.
Temperament and Tankmates
This species is generally peaceful and works well in community reef aquariums with other non-aggressive marine fish. Suitable tankmates include peaceful tangs, gobies, blennies, anthias, cardinalfish, and many other appropriately sized reef species.
Care should still be taken when mixing multiple fairy wrasses. Males may display territorial or dominance behavior toward similarly colored or closely related wrasses, particularly in smaller aquariums.
In larger systems, fairy wrasses are sometimes maintained alongside other compatible Cirrhilabrus species when adequate space, hiding areas, and careful introduction practices are provided.
Reef Compatibility
Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe and does not normally damage corals, clams, snails, shrimp, or other ornamental reef invertebrates.
Its feeding behavior is focused primarily on small planktonic organisms in the water column rather than sessile reef animals. This makes it a strong candidate for mixed reefs, SPS systems, LPS aquariums, and soft coral displays.
As with any marine fish, individual behavior can vary, but predation on established ornamental invertebrates is not considered characteristic of this species.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–78°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable conditions and avoid rapid swings in temperature, salinity, or pH. Consistency is more important than targeting one exact value within the recommended ranges.
Common Considerations
- Excellent jumper: A secure mesh lid or fitted aquarium cover is essential.
- Active swimmer: Provide generous open-water swimming space in addition to rockwork.
- Peaceful temperament: Best maintained with similarly peaceful community fish rather than highly aggressive tankmates.
- Wrasse compatibility: Use care when combining males with other fairy wrasses, particularly similar-looking species.
- Frequent feeding: Regular small meals help support the high activity level and body condition typical of fairy wrasses.
