The Hydra 64 HD represents Aqua Illumination's most capable single-module reef light to date, built around 64 primary LEDs arranged across seven color channels with an additional dedicated moonlight LED and channel. The revised optical system uses TIR (total internal reflector) lenses to shape each cluster's output, improve mixing efficiency, and reduce visible color banding — a persistent criticism of earlier multi-channel LED fixtures. The result is higher average PAR across the recommended coverage area and better color pop without sacrificing spread.
The redesigned housing is thinner and lower-profile than previous Hydra generations, which reduces visual presence above the tank and eases heat dissipation passively, reducing strain on active cooling components over time. Water resistance has been meaningfully improved as well — the fixture is not rated waterproof, but the updated design handles the humidity and splash exposure typical of open-top reef systems more reliably than its predecessors.
Control is managed through the myAI app (iOS and Android), which connects directly to the fixture via Bluetooth for on-site programming. Scheduling, spectrum curves, storm effects, and moonlight behavior are all configurable without additional hardware. For users running a Neptune Systems Apex controller, MXM compatibility allows the Hydra 64 HD to be integrated into Apex Fusion alongside EcoTech Marine equipment — eliminating the need to manage separate control ecosystems.
The HD power-routing feature, carried over from previous HD-generation fixtures, allows output capacity unused by one color channel to be redirected to another, giving users more headroom to push individual channels without exceeding the fixture's power envelope. Effective coverage is rated at 30" x 30" at a recommended mounting height of 8–10". A separate power supply is included. Mounting hardware — including flex arms, HMS rail systems, hanging kits, and model-specific brackets — is sold separately and compatible with the standard Hydra mounting ecosystem.
