The Hydra 64 HD represents Aqua Illumination's current-generation take on their flagship module-format reef light. The core change from the previous generation is a denser LED array—64 diodes across seven spectral channels—paired with TIR (total internal reflector) lenses that shape and blend output at the cluster level. The practical result is higher average PAR, a slightly wider footprint (effective spread of 30" x 30" at a recommended mounting height of 8–10"), and noticeably reduced color banding across the water column. AI's HD power-routing feature, which allows headroom in one channel to be redirected to another, carries forward from earlier HD fixtures and remains one of the more useful tools for dialing in a custom spectrum without sacrificing output ceiling.

The physical redesign addresses two longstanding complaints about earlier AI modules: form factor and moisture vulnerability. The Hydra 64 HD is thinner and lower-profile than its predecessor, reducing visual presence over the tank. The revised plastics and assembly are more water-resistant—not waterproof, but meaningfully improved for the humid, salt-spray environment of a working reef system. Active cooling demands are also reduced, which translates to quieter operation and longer LED and driver life over time. A dedicated moonlight LED and channel have been added, giving independent control over lunar simulation without borrowing from the primary spectrum channels.

Control is handled through the myAI app, which uses onsite Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for direct connection—no hub or cloud dependency required for basic programming. The Hydra 64 HD is also MXM-compatible, meaning it can be placed under Neptune Apex and Apex Fusion control alongside EcoTech Marine devices on a single interface. For aquarists already running an Apex, this eliminates the need to manage a separate app for lighting schedules and allows light output to be tied to other Apex-driven parameters.

Mounting hardware is sold separately. AI offers several options suited to different tank configurations: the Flex Arm for rimmed tanks, the HMS Multi Light Mount Kit for side-of-rim installation, the HMS Hanging Kit for ceiling or wall suspension, and tank-length HMS Tracks paired with dedicated Hydra 64 brackets that allow individual slide and rotation adjustment per fixture. For multi-light arrays over larger systems, the track system is the most practical route. The 135-watt draw and effective 24" depth penetration make this fixture best suited to tanks in the 75–150 gallon range running mixed reef or SPS-dominant setups.
