The Rectangle Triggerfish is a striking, unmistakable saltwater fish known for its bold geometric markings and equally bold personality. Its pale body is contrasted by a large black wedge along the flanks, dark facial bands, yellow accents, and vivid blue lines around the face and fins. The result is a dramatic, highly recognizable marine aquarium fish that becomes an impressive centerpiece as it matures.
Native to shallow reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, Rhinecanthus rectangulus is commonly associated with rocky reef zones, rubble, coral, and areas exposed to strong surge. In nature it actively searches the substrate and reef structure for crustaceans, mollusks, worms, echinoderms, algae, and other foods. This natural foraging behavior translates into an intelligent, active aquarium fish that frequently explores and rearranges its surroundings.
Its territorial temperament and powerful jaws make it best suited to a spacious fish-only aquarium or FOWLR system with robust tankmates. Although highly desirable for its coloration, activity, and engaging behavior, it is not an appropriate choice for a conventional reef aquarium containing ornamental invertebrates.

Tank Requirements
Provide a large aquarium with substantial open swimming space combined with sturdy rockwork, caves, and crevices. Rectangle Triggerfish are active and territorial, but they also appreciate secure retreats where they can wedge themselves into the rockwork when resting or feeling threatened.
Rock structures should be firmly secured. This species is a persistent explorer and may move loose rocks, rubble, shells, or other aquarium decorations while searching for food. A sand or coarse-sand substrate works well and encourages natural digging and foraging behavior.
Strong filtration and efficient protein skimming are recommended because triggerfish are enthusiastic feeders and can place a substantial biological load on the aquarium. Moderate to strong water movement is appropriate, particularly when balanced with sheltered areas around caves. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended.
Long-term housing should account for the fish's approximately 12-inch adult size, strong swimming behavior, and increasing territoriality as it matures.
Diet and Feeding
The Rectangle Triggerfish has a broad natural diet that includes crustaceans, mollusks, worms, echinoderms, small fish, algae, and other reef-associated foods. In captivity, it should receive a varied diet with an emphasis on nutritious marine-based foods.
Offer mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, scallop, and quality marine pellets or frozen carnivore blends. Occasional marine algae sheets or other vegetable-based marine foods can complement the diet.
Hard-shelled foods such as clam, mussel, and shell-on shrimp are particularly useful because they encourage natural feeding behavior and provide material for the fish's continuously growing teeth to work against.
Feed one to two appropriately sized meals per day, adjusting portions according to the fish's size, condition, and overall aquarium nutrient load.
Temperament and Tankmates
Rectangle Triggerfish are territorial and assertive, with aggression often becoming more pronounced as they mature. They are generally best maintained as a single specimen rather than with another Rectangle Triggerfish or closely related triggerfish.
Suitable tankmates include appropriately sized, robust marine fish capable of competing for food and tolerating an assertive neighbor. Larger tangs, sturdy angelfish, substantial wrasses, and other similarly robust fish can be appropriate when aquarium space allows.
Avoid very small fish, timid species, slow feeders, and fish with long or delicate fins. Caution is also necessary with other triggerfish and similarly territorial species, particularly in aquariums without enough room for separate territories.
Whenever possible, establish more peaceful tankmates before introducing an aggressive triggerfish and provide multiple visual barriers and retreats throughout the aquascape.
Reef Compatibility
Not reef safe.
The Rectangle Triggerfish should not be considered suitable for a traditional reef aquarium. Its natural diet includes many of the animals commonly kept as ornamental reef inhabitants.
Shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, sea urchins, and other mobile invertebrates may be attacked or eaten. Corals and other sessile organisms can also be bitten, overturned, or damaged as the fish investigates and manipulates its environment.
A fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium is the preferred long-term setup.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable water quality, strong oxygenation, and consistent maintenance are more important than attempting to maintain one exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Adults can reach approximately 12 inches and require substantial swimming space and long-term housing.
-
Territorial behavior and aggression can increase significantly as the fish matures.
-
Secure rockwork carefully because this species may move rubble, shells, and loose aquarium decorations.
-
Ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, sea urchins, and other invertebrates are at significant risk of predation.
-
Provide hard-shelled marine foods regularly to encourage natural feeding behavior and help wear the teeth.
