FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What is the minimum aquarium size for a Humu Humu Triggerfish?

Plan on 180 gallons for an adult, furnished with open swimming space and secure rocky caves. The aquascape should be stable, since this fish routinely moves rock and digs in the sand.

Can it be kept in a reef aquarium with corals and ornamental invertebrates?

No. It is unsafe with both corals and invertebrates, and its natural diet includes crustaceans, mollusks, snails, sea urchins, corals, and smaller fishes.

What foods and feeding schedule are appropriate in captivity?

Offer chopped marine fish, shrimp, squid, clam flesh, and varied frozen meaty foods, supplemented with marine algae or spirulina. Feed two or three times daily and include shell material the fish can bite to help wear its teeth.

The Humu Picasso Triggerfish is one of the most distinctive saltwater fish available for a bold fish-only display. Its cream-to-tan body is marked with dramatic black bands, vivid blue facial lines, yellow-orange accents, and abstract geometric patterns that give the species its familiar Picasso name. As it matures, its confident swimming style and unmistakable personality make it an impressive centerpiece marine aquarium fish.

Native to shallow reef flats and protected lagoons across a broad portion of the Indo-Pacific, Rhinecanthus aculeatusnaturally patrols areas of rock, rubble, and sand in search of food. It is an intelligent, territorial triggerfish that becomes increasingly assertive with age. Because it feeds readily on crustaceans, mollusks, and other reef animals, it is best suited to a spacious fish-only aquarium or FOWLR system rather than a traditional reef aquarium.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Aggressive
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: No
Region: Indo-Pacific, from East Africa eastward through the central Pacific to Hawaii and French Polynesia, north to southern Japan and south to northern Australia
Scientific Name: Rhinecanthus aculeatus

Tank Requirements

Provide a spacious aquarium with a combination of substantial open swimming room and sturdy rockwork. Caves and crevices are important because this triggerfish will often retreat into rockwork and use its locking dorsal spine to secure itself when resting or threatened.

All rock structures should be stable and securely positioned. Humu Picasso Triggerfish are strong, inquisitive fish that may move loose rubble, shells, or smaller pieces of aquascaping while investigating their surroundings. A sand or coarse-sand substrate works well and allows natural foraging behavior.

Strong biological filtration and efficient mechanical filtration are recommended because triggerfish are enthusiastic feeders that can produce a significant nutrient load. Moderate to strong water movement is appropriate as long as quieter areas remain available around caves and resting locations. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, this species consumes a broad range of benthic foods, including crustaceans, mollusks, worms, sea urchins, and other small animals. Captive specimens generally adapt readily to a varied diet of high-quality meaty marine foods.

Offer foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, scallop, and quality marine carnivore pellets. Larger specimens benefit from occasional shell-on shrimp, clam, or other appropriately sized hard foods that encourage natural chewing and help maintain the teeth.

Feed one to two appropriately sized meals per day, varying the menu rather than relying heavily on a single food.

Temperament and Tankmates

Humu Picasso Triggerfish are territorial and can become considerably more aggressive as they mature. They are generally best housed as a single specimen unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and compatibility is carefully planned.

Choose robust tankmates of similar size that are capable of holding their own without being overly aggressive themselves. Larger tangs, certain angelfish, sturdy wrasses, and other substantial fish may be appropriate depending on aquarium size and individual temperament.

Avoid very small fish, slow or timid species, and fish with long delicate fins. Other triggerfish and similarly shaped territorial fish should be added only with considerable caution. Introducing the Picasso Triggerfish after more peaceful tankmates are established can sometimes help reduce territorial dominance.

Reef Compatibility

Not reef safe.

While the fish may not constantly target every coral, its natural feeding behavior makes it unsuitable for a conventional reef aquarium. Ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, sea urchins, and other invertebrates may be eaten or damaged.

Corals and other sessile animals can also be bitten or disturbed while the fish investigates the aquascape. A fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium is the more appropriate long-term environment.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable, well-oxygenated water and consistent maintenance are more important than attempting to maintain one exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Adults can approach approximately 12 inches and require substantial long-term swimming space.

  • Territorial behavior and aggression commonly increase as the fish matures.

  • Rockwork should be secure because this species may move loose rubble and rearrange portions of the aquascape.

  • Ornamental crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms, and other invertebrates are likely to be viewed as food.

  • Provide caves or crevices large enough for the fish to retreat into and securely rest.

Species identification, adult size, natural distribution, habitat, and wild feeding ecology were cross-checked against established species data, while the 180-gallon recommendation reflects a conservative adult-size housing standard.
