Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Half Black Angelfish, Centropyge vrolikii, is a distinctive dwarf marine angelfish known for its unusual two-tone coloration. The front portion of the body is pearly gray to silvery white, while the rear half transitions dramatically to deep charcoal or black. Subtle yellow accents around the face and fins add additional contrast, giving this saltwater fish an understated but highly recognizable appearance.

Native to the Western Pacific, with a distribution extending from parts of Indonesia and the eastern Indian Ocean through Micronesia and the western Pacific islands, Centropyge vrolikii inhabits coral-rich lagoons and seaward reefs. It naturally spends much of its day moving through reef structure and grazing across rock surfaces. In a marine aquarium, the Half Black Angelfish is active, inquisitive, and generally confident once acclimated.

Its manageable adult size and engaging behavior make it an attractive choice for established fish-only aquariums and carefully planned reef aquariums. Like most dwarf angelfish, however, it has a semi-aggressive temperament and should be considered reef safe with caution due to its potential interest in corals and other sessile invertebrates.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 70 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean
Scientific Name: Centropyge vrolikii

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature saltwater aquarium with extensive live rock arranged into caves, crevices, overhangs, and sheltered passages. Half Black Angelfish naturally spend considerable time close to reef structure, and established rockwork provides both security and important grazing surfaces.

Leave open swimming lanes around and between rock structures so the fish can actively patrol the aquarium. A well-established system with natural algae and biofilm is preferable to a newly established or sparsely decorated aquarium.

Moderate reef-style water movement is appropriate, and stable water quality is essential. A secure lid is recommended, particularly during acclimation, as newly introduced or startled fish may attempt to jump.

Diet and Feeding

The Half Black Angelfish is an omnivore with a natural diet that includes algae and other material grazed from reef surfaces. In captivity, variety is important for maintaining body condition and encouraging natural feeding behavior.

Offer marine algae, spirulina-based foods, high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and prepared angelfish formulas. Foods containing marine algae and sponge material can be particularly useful for providing a broader nutritional profile.

Algae sheets may be offered as supplemental grazing food. Feed small portions two to three times daily when practical, while allowing the fish to graze naturally on established live rock between meals.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Half Black Angelfish has a semi-aggressive temperament and may become territorial once established. It can defend preferred caves or sections of rockwork, particularly against other dwarf angelfish or fish with a similar body shape.

It is generally best kept as the only dwarf angelfish in the aquarium unless the system is exceptionally spacious and specifically arranged for multiple territorial angelfish. Very timid tankmates may be intimidated by an established specimen, while peaceful to moderately assertive marine fish are usually more appropriate companions.

When adding this species to a community aquarium, providing multiple hiding areas and breaking up direct lines of sight through the aquascape can help reduce territorial confrontations.

Reef Compatibility

The Half Black Angelfish is reef safe with caution. Although some individuals coexist successfully with corals for extended periods, dwarf angelfish cannot be considered completely dependable around sessile invertebrates.

Individual fish may nip at fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clam mantles, feather dusters, and other sessile organisms. Behavior varies considerably between specimens, so close observation is recommended in reef aquariums containing valuable corals or clams.

Healthy ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally at lower risk, although small or exposed invertebrates may occasionally be investigated.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable water chemistry and avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or pH. Consistency is more important than continually adjusting the aquarium to achieve an exact number within the recommended range.

Common Considerations

  • Provide mature live rock with numerous caves, crevices, and natural grazing surfaces.

  • This species can become territorial, particularly toward other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped fish.

  • Reef compatibility varies by individual, with coral, zoanthid, and clam-mantle nipping possible.

  • A varied diet containing both marine algae and meaty foods is preferable to relying on a single prepared food.

  • Adults can reach approximately 4–5 inches, so long-term swimming space and territory should be considered when selecting an aquarium.
