The juvenile Gold Back Triggerfish (Xanthichthys caeruleolineatus), also known as the Goldenback, Blueline, or Outrigger Triggerfish, is an impressive saltwater fish that undergoes a dramatic transformation as it matures. Juveniles are generally pale silver, cream, or grayish in appearance with comparatively subdued markings, gradually developing the distinctive golden upper body, lighter lower body, and blue-edged horizontal coloration associated with mature specimens.

Native to tropical Indo-Pacific waters, this species is primarily associated with deep seaward reefs and outer reef slopes, often occurring well above the bottom in areas with strong water movement. Unlike many triggerfish that spend much of their time searching the substrate for hard-shelled prey, Xanthichthys caeruleolineatus is naturally adapted to feeding heavily on zooplankton in the water column.

Although juveniles may initially appear modest in size, the Gold Back Triggerfish can reach approximately 14 inches as an adult and develops into a powerful, highly active swimmer. It is among the more reef-compatible triggerfish, but its eventual size and opportunistic nature mean it should still be considered reef safe with caution.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 250 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-Pacific – Indonesia and Micronesia through the central Pacific, including Hawaii, north to southern Japan
Scientific Name: Xanthichthys caeruleolineatus

Tank Requirements

Provide a large, mature marine aquarium with extensive open swimming space. Gold Back Triggerfish are strong, active swimmers that spend considerable time cruising through the water column, making a long aquarium footprint particularly important for long-term housing.

Substantial rockwork should be incorporated around the sides and rear of the aquarium to create caves, overhangs, and secure resting areas without sacrificing open water. Rock structures should be stable and securely positioned, as larger triggerfish are capable of disturbing loose rubble and unsecured decorations.

Moderate to strong, well-distributed water movement and excellent oxygenation are appropriate for this species and help replicate the current-swept outer reef environments it naturally inhabits.

A securely fitted aquarium lid is recommended. Triggerfish are powerful swimmers and may jump when startled or during territorial interactions.

Diet and Feeding

The Gold Back Triggerfish is primarily a carnivorous planktivore in nature, feeding heavily on zooplankton suspended in the water column.

In captivity, offer a varied diet including enriched mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, clam, squid, mussel, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen carnivore blends, and high-quality marine pellets. Juveniles should receive appropriately sized foods that can be consumed easily.

Feed two to three times daily. As the fish grows, incorporating firmer marine foods such as clam or shrimp with shell material can also encourage natural chewing behavior and help manage continuously growing triggerfish teeth.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Gold Back Triggerfish is generally less aggressive than many other large triggerfish species, but it should still be considered semi-aggressive. Juveniles may be relatively reserved when first introduced, while larger specimens often become increasingly confident as they mature.

Suitable tankmates include tangs, rabbitfish, larger angelfish, robust wrasses, other appropriately sized triggerfish, and similarly confident marine fish. Avoid very small, timid, or slow-moving species that may be intimidated or eventually viewed as potential prey.

Adequate swimming room and multiple retreats help minimize territorial disputes. A single specimen is the most straightforward choice for most home aquariums.

Reef Compatibility

The Gold Back Triggerfish is best considered reef safe with caution. Its plankton-feeding lifestyle makes it substantially more suitable for reef aquariums than many bottom-feeding triggerfish, and it does not normally target corals as a primary food source.

However, no large triggerfish should be assumed completely safe with all reef inhabitants. Ornamental shrimp, small crabs, tiny fish, sea urchins, worms, and other exposed invertebrates may be investigated or consumed, particularly as the fish matures.

Coral compatibility is generally good, but individual behavior should always be monitored in mixed reef systems.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable, highly oxygenated water with strong filtration and consistent nutrient management. A mature Gold Back Triggerfish is a large, well-fed marine fish capable of producing a substantial bioload. Stability and consistently good water quality are more important than targeting one exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Juvenile appearance: Young specimens are considerably more subdued than adults and develop their characteristic golden and blue-lined coloration as they mature.

  • Large adult size: Reaches approximately 14 inches and requires a very large aquarium with extensive open swimming space.

  • Reef safe with caution: Generally coral-compatible, but ornamental crustaceans and other small invertebrates may be at risk.

  • Powerful swimmer: Requires a long aquarium footprint, strong oxygenation, and substantial unobstructed swimming room.

  • Adult personality: May become increasingly confident and territorial as it grows despite being relatively mild compared with many other triggerfish.
