French Angelfish - Adult - Atlantic

The French Angelfish (Pomacanthus paru) is an impressive large-bodied saltwater fish known for its dramatic adult coloration and unmistakable presence. Mature specimens develop a deep charcoal to nearly black body, with individual scales edged in golden yellow to create a finely patterned appearance. Yellow accents around the eyes and fins, a pale chin, and elongated dorsal and anal fin extensions complete the distinctive adult look.

Native primarily to the Western Atlantic, this species ranges from Florida and the Bahamas through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico and south toward Brazil. Adults inhabit coral and rocky reefs, where they are frequently encountered around large reef structures and areas rich in sponges and other sessile organisms. In a marine aquarium, their confident swimming behavior and substantial size make them exceptional centerpiece fish.

Adult French Angelfish are best suited to large fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquariums. Although generally manageable with appropriately robust tankmates, mature individuals can become territorial, especially toward other large angelfish. Their natural feeding habits also make them unsuitable for most conventional reef aquariums.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature aquarium with substantial swimming room and securely arranged rockwork. Large caves, overhangs, arches, and swim-throughs give an adult French Angelfish places to retreat while also providing surfaces for natural grazing.

Adults can reach approximately 16 inches and develop a deep, powerful body, so long-term housing should prioritize aquarium length, open water, and unrestricted swimming space. Avoid filling the aquarium so densely with rock that the fish cannot turn and cruise comfortably.

Strong biological filtration, efficient protein skimming, good oxygenation, and consistent maintenance are recommended. Large angelfish feed heavily and can contribute a significant biological load.

Moderate to strong, varied water movement is appropriate as long as sheltered areas remain available. Rockwork should be stable and securely positioned for a large, active fish.

Diet and Feeding

The French Angelfish is an omnivore that naturally consumes large amounts of sponge material along with algae, bryozoans, zoantharians, gorgonians, tunicates, and other reef organisms.

In captivity, provide a varied diet that includes high-quality marine angelfish preparations containing sponge material. Supplement with mysis shrimp, chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, squid, and balanced frozen marine blends.

Marine algae, spirulina-based foods, and nori should also be offered regularly to provide important plant matter. Quality marine pellets can be incorporated once readily accepted.

Feed two to three moderate meals per day. Dietary variety is particularly important with large marine angelfish and is preferable to relying heavily on a single frozen or dry food.

Temperament and Tankmates

Adult French Angelfish are semi-aggressive and often become dominant members of the aquarium. They are generally compatible with appropriately sized, robust marine fish when adequate space and territory are available.

Potential tankmates include larger tangs, rabbitfish, triggerfish, wrasses, groupers, and other substantial marine species with compatible temperaments.

Use particular caution with other large angelfish. Similar body shapes, feeding territories, and established dominance can lead to significant aggression. Keeping a single French Angelfish is the most practical approach for most home aquariums unless the system is exceptionally large.

Very timid or passive fish may be intimidated by a mature specimen and can have difficulty competing during feeding.

Reef Compatibility

The French Angelfish is not reef safe.

Its natural diet includes sponges, zoantharians, gorgonians, tunicates, algae, and other attached reef organisms. In an aquarium, adults may nip or consume soft corals, fleshy LPS corals, zoanthids, sponge growth, clam mantles, and other ornamental sessile invertebrates.

Individual behavior varies, but this species should not be selected for a reef aquarium where coral and clam preservation is a priority. It is much better suited to a large fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock display.
