Bubble Tip Anemone
The bubble tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) is one of the most recognizable invertebrates in the reef hobby, known for its flowing tentacles and its ability to host clownfish. Unlike corals, it has no rigid skeleton. Instead, it anchors with a muscular foot and can move to a new spot when conditions are not to its liking, which makes careful placement part of keeping one.
Bubble tip anemones come in a range of colors, including green, rose, and rainbow variations. They are relatively hardy compared to many other anemones, but they need stable water and proper lighting and can react to sudden changes. If you are considering a bubble tip anemone for sale, plan its lighting, flow, and pump protection before it arrives.
Natural Habitat and Clownfish Hosting
Bubble tip anemones are found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, Fiji, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef. They settle on reef slopes, in lagoons, and in rocky crevices, anchoring securely and extending their tentacles into moderate to high light and gentle to moderate flow to capture food and photosynthesize. Their mutualistic relationship with clownfish, which shelter among the tentacles, benefits both animals and is a big reason this species is so popular.

Water Chemistry
Stability matters more than any single number. Sudden parameter swings can cause a bubble tip anemone to retract, move, or detach from its anchoring point, and drastic changes may even trigger it to split as a survival response. These anemones do well with moderate nutrient levels and can handle slightly elevated nitrate, but excess nutrients fuel algae that can irritate their tissue. Regular water changes help keep conditions steady.
Lighting
Moderate to high light in the 200–350 PAR range supports the anemone's symbiotic zooxanthellae, which supply much of its nutrition through photosynthesis. Without enough light, an anemone may shrink, lose color, bleach, or wander in search of a better location. Blue-spectrum lighting enhances fluorescence, and any change in lighting should be made gradually. We keep our anemones under controlled EcoTech Marine Radion and T5 lighting. In a new tank, place the anemone in a well-lit area and let it settle naturally to find its preferred spot.
Water Flow
Moderate, indirect flow lets the tentacles sway naturally, delivers nutrients, and keeps detritus off the tissue. Strong, direct currents can cause retraction or send the anemone searching for a calmer location. Randomized flow from adjustable pumps or wavemakers helps simulate natural reef conditions. Powerhead guards are recommended so the anemone cannot get caught in a pump if it decides to move.
What We Feed Our Anemones
Bubble tip anemones get much of their energy from light but benefit from supplemental feeding for growth and color.
- Foods: small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, or finely chopped seafood
- Frequency: 1–2 times per week
- Method: target-feed with a turkey baster or pipette to limit waste
- Avoid overfeeding: uneaten food degrades water quality and can lead to algae
We feed a mix of mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and Tisochrysis, Rhodomonas, and Tetraselmis phytoplankton strains.
Placement and Tankmates
Because bubble tip anemones have stinging tentacles and can relocate, introduce them with care to avoid conflicts with corals and other invertebrates. Give the anemone room away from sensitive corals and keep pump intakes covered.
Common Bubble Tip Anemone Challenges
- Wandering around the tank: searching for better lighting, flow, or placement
- Bleaching: insufficient lighting, sudden parameter changes, or prolonged stress
- Shrinking or failing to expand: poor water quality, excessive flow, or lack of nutrients
- Melting or deterioration: severe stress, bacterial infections, or exposure to toxins
- Splitting too frequently: a response to environmental stress such as sudden parameter swings or lighting changes
How to Acclimate a Bubble Tip Anemone
- Temperature: float the bag in your aquarium to equalize temperature.
- Drip acclimation: slowly mix your tank water into the shipping water so the anemone can adjust to differences in water chemistry.
- Pump safety: make sure powerhead guards are in place before release.
- Placement: set the anemone near rockwork in a well-lit area with moderate, indirect flow, and let it attach and choose its position.
