Dusky Angelfish

The Dusky Angelfish (Centropyge multispinis), also known as the Bluefin Angelfish or Manyspined Angelfish, is an attractive dwarf marine angelfish with subtle coloration that rewards a closer look. Its deep brown to blackish-blue body is accented by fine vertical markings, a dark spot behind the gill cover, and brilliant sapphire-blue edging along the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Adults can reach approximately 5.5–6 inches in total length.

Native to the Indo-West Pacific, C. multispinis ranges from East Africa across the Indian Ocean to western Thailand. It inhabits coral-rich and rubble areas of lagoon and seaward reefs, where it spends much of the day moving through reef structure and grazing across rock surfaces.

For the marine aquarium, the Dusky Angelfish is a hardy and active dwarf angelfish best suited to a mature system with abundant live rock. Its compact size makes it easier to accommodate than full-size angelfish, but it still requires adequate territory and can become assertive toward similar fish. It may be kept in fish-only aquariums or carefully selected reef aquariums, although its tendency to nip sessile invertebrates means reef compatibility should be considered with caution.

With an adult size approaching 5.5–6 inches and the territorial behavior typical of larger dwarf angelfish, a 70-gallon or larger aquarium provides appropriate long-term swimming, grazing, and territorial space.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature saltwater aquarium with abundant established rockwork arranged into caves, crevices, overhangs, and open passages. Dusky Angelfish naturally inhabit coral-rich and rubble reef environments and benefit from a complex aquascape that provides both shelter and extensive surfaces for grazing.

Leave adequate open swimming room between rock structures rather than creating an overly dense aquascape. Multiple hiding areas are particularly useful when the fish is first introduced and can also help reduce territorial conflict with tankmates.

No specialized substrate is required, so sand or another conventional marine substrate is suitable. Good filtration, moderate water movement, and stable water quality are recommended. A mature aquarium with natural algal growth is preferable to a newly established system.

Diet and Feeding

The Dusky Angelfish is an omnivorous grazer and should receive a varied diet containing both marine vegetable matter and protein-rich foods. Offer Spirulina, marine algae, nori, quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood, frozen omnivore blends, and appropriately sized marine pellets.

Established live rock is especially beneficial because it allows the fish to browse naturally between prepared meals. Algae-based foods should remain a regular component of the diet rather than relying exclusively on mysis or other meaty foods.

Feed two to three smaller meals daily when practical, particularly for newly introduced specimens or fish in aquariums with limited natural grazing.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Dusky Angelfish is semi-aggressive and can become territorial once established. Aggression is most likely toward other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped fish competing for caves and grazing territory. Smaller aquariums can intensify this behavior.

Suitable tankmates include clownfish, wrasses, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, tangs, and other appropriately sized marine community fish that are confident without being excessively aggressive.

For most aquariums, keeping a single Dusky Angelfish is the simplest arrangement. Combining multiple Centropygeangelfish should be reserved for larger aquariums with extensive rockwork, multiple territories, and carefully planned introductions.

Reef Compatibility

The Dusky Angelfish is reef safe with caution. It is not primarily a coral predator, but like many dwarf angelfish it is a persistent grazer and may nip sessile invertebrates. LiveAquaria specifically notes that the species is prone to picking at sessile organisms.

Fleshy LPS corals, SPS polyps, zoanthids, soft corals, clam mantles, and other stationary invertebrates may attract attention. Individual behavior varies considerably—some specimens coexist successfully in reef aquariums, while others develop persistent picking habits.

Ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally at lower risk than corals and other sessile organisms.
