Yes. Bluehead Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning most start as females and the dominant individual can transition to male. In aquariums, a terminal male may develop from a larger female if kept singly or if no male is present. Signs include a more intense blue head, stronger contrast in the body pattern, increased territoriality, and display behaviors like flaring fins and active patrolling. The transition is influenced by social structure, size, and maturity.
What tank size and aquascape does a Bluehead Wrasse actually need to stay healthy long-term?
This is an active, open-water swimmer that also wants plenty of rockwork to hunt and sleep in. A long tank is more important than just volume; for most hobbyists, 125 gallons or larger with at least 6 feet of swimming length is much more appropriate than a standard mid-sized reef tank. Provide a secure lid, substantial live rock, and open channels for swimming. Bluehead Wrasses are strong jumpers and will use every gap in an uncovered aquarium.
Can a Bluehead Wrasse be kept in a reef tank with shrimp, snails, and small crabs?
Usually not with full confidence. Bluehead Wrasses are opportunistic predators and are often unsafe with ornamental shrimp, small crabs, tiny hermits, and very small snails. They may also pick at worms and other small invertebrates. Larger, more robust tankmates are generally safer. In a reef setting, they are better treated as “reef compatible with caution,” not as a guaranteed invertebrate-safe fish.
What should I feed a Bluehead Wrasse to keep its color and activity up?
Offer a varied meaty diet several times a day, especially if the fish is newly added or very active. Good foods include mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, krill, enriched frozen marine blends, clam, and high-quality carnivore pellets. That is normal behavior. Bluehead Wrasses sleep by diving into the sand, where they remain hidden until morning. Tank Requirements
The Bluehead Wrasse is an exceptionally active swimmer and should be provided with a spacious aquarium offering long, unobstructed swimming areas. Adults can reach approximately 10 inches, making a 125-gallon or larger aquarium appropriate for long-term housing.
Provide substantial rockwork with caves, crevices, and sheltered areas where the fish can retreat when resting or frightened. A section of fine sand approximately 2–3 inches deep is also beneficial, as this species may dive into the substrate when alarmed and may occasionally use it for nighttime shelter.
Moderate to strong water movement, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are recommended. A tightly fitted lid or mesh cover is essential because Thalassoma wrasses are powerful jumpers capable of escaping through small openings.
Diet and Feeding
The Bluehead Wrasse is primarily carnivorous and naturally consumes zooplankton, small crustaceans, worms, and other benthic animals. It may also remove ectoparasites from other fish as part of its natural feeding behavior.
Offer a varied captive diet of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, clam, squid, frozen plankton blends, and high-quality marine pellets. Appropriately sized chopped seafood provides additional variety for larger specimens.

Temperament and Tankmates

Suitable tankmates include appropriately sized tangs, angelfish, rabbitfish, larger wrasses, triggerfish of compatible temperament, and other confident community species. Very peaceful or delicate fish may be intimidated by its constant activity and assertive feeding behavior.
Mature males can be particularly territorial toward other Bluehead Wrasses and similar wrasses. Multiple specimens require substantially more space and carefully planned social structure.

Shrimp, small crabs, snails, worms, feather dusters, brittle stars, and other small mobile or sessile invertebrates may be hunted and eaten. This natural predatory behavior typically becomes more significant as the fish grows.
For this reason, the species can work well in coral-focused reef aquariums where valuable ornamental invertebrates are limited, but it should not be considered completely reef safe.
