FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

How large an aquarium should I plan for?

Plan on at least 220 gallons for long-term care, with extensive live rock and open swimming room. Published recommendations do conflict, with some references listing figures as low as 150 gallons, but the larger volume is the safer commitment.

What should I feed a Blue Face Angelfish?

Offer sponge-based angelfish food, marine algae or Spirulina, mysis, enriched brine shrimp, frozen shrimp, and other varied marine foods. Serve small portions at least three times daily.

Can it be kept in a reef tank or with other angelfish?

No. It may nip corals, clam mantles, sponges, tubeworms, and other sessile invertebrates, so a fish-only system with live rock is appropriate. It is also territorial and should be the only angelfish, housed with large, robust tankmates.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.

The Changing Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon), also known as the Yellowface or Yellowmask Angelfish, represents the striking transitional stage between the dramatically striped juvenile and the richly colored adult. During this phase, the juvenile's dark blue-black body and vertical sapphire-blue and white bands begin to break apart as pale yellow coloration, blue-edged scales, yellow fins, and the characteristic blue face and yellow eye mask emerge. Because the transformation occurs gradually, every changing specimen can display a slightly different combination of juvenile and adult patterning.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, P. xanthometopon ranges from the Maldives east to Vanuatu and north to the Yaeyama Islands, with populations also occurring around Palau and Micronesia. It inhabits coral-rich lagoons, channels, and outer reef slopes, usually remaining close to caves and substantial reef structure. Juveniles settle in shallow inshore caves with algae growth before moving into broader reef habitat as they mature. Adults can reach approximately 15 inches in total length.

As it transitions into adulthood, the Blueface Angelfish becomes a substantial and increasingly confident marine aquarium fish. It is best suited to a large, mature fish-only or FOWLR aquarium with extensive rockwork, generous swimming space, strong filtration, and a varied diet containing sponge material. Its natural feeding behavior makes corals, clams, sponges, tunicates, and other sessile invertebrates vulnerable, so this species should not be considered reliably reef safe.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 220 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore / Spongivore
Reef Safe: No
Region: Indo-Pacific – Maldives to Vanuatu, north to the Yaeyama Islands, including Palau and Micronesia
Scientific Name: Pomacanthus xanthometopon

The species reaches approximately 38 cm, or 15 inches, and established marine aquarium husbandry references recommend a minimum aquarium of 220 gallons for long-term housing.

Tank Requirements

Provide a large, mature saltwater aquarium with extensive established rockwork arranged into caves, arches, overhangs, cracks, and crevices. Blueface Angelfish naturally remain closely associated with reef structure, and a changing specimen will appreciate multiple secure retreats while adjusting to its surroundings. Mature live rock also supplies valuable surfaces for browsing and natural grazing.

A 220-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for long-term care. Preserve substantial open swimming space between rock structures so the eventual deep-bodied adult can cruise and turn comfortably. Strong biological filtration, good oxygenation, and consistent water movement are appropriate for this large, actively feeding marine angelfish.

No specialized substrate is required. Sand or another conventional marine substrate is suitable, with aquarium maturity, stable water quality, and a balance of shelter and swimming room taking priority.

Diet and Feeding

The Blueface Angelfish is an omnivorous grazer that naturally consumes sponges, tunicates, and other encrusting reef organisms. Quality marine angelfish preparations containing sponge should therefore remain a regular part of the captive diet.

Offer sponge-containing frozen angelfish formulas, Spirulina, marine algae, nori, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped shrimp and other marine seafood, quality omnivore blends, and marine pellets. Established live rock provides additional grazing opportunities between prepared meals.

Feed two to three smaller meals daily, with three feeding opportunities especially useful for growing or newly acclimated specimens. Regular varied feeding helps support body condition as the fish progresses through its adult color transformation.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Changing Blueface Angelfish is semi-aggressive, and territorial behavior can become more pronounced as it develops into a mature adult. Established specimens may defend preferred caves, grazing areas, and sections of the aquarium, with aggression particularly likely toward other large angelfish of similar shape.

Suitable tankmates include appropriately sized tangs, rabbitfish, larger wrasses, robust clownfish, and other medium-to-large marine fish capable of competing for food without continually challenging the angelfish. Very timid species may be intimidated as the Blueface becomes larger and more assertive.

Keeping a single Blueface Angelfish is the most straightforward arrangement for most aquariums. Housing multiple large angelfish should be reserved for substantially larger systems with extensive visual barriers, multiple territories, and carefully planned introductions.

Reef Compatibility

The Blueface Angelfish is not considered reliably reef safe. Aquarium specimens are known to nip stony and soft corals as well as clam mantles, while sponges and tunicates fall directly within the species' natural feeding ecology.

A changing specimen may initially appear compatible with certain corals, but this should not be interpreted as dependable long-term reef safety. Fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clam mantles, sponges, tunicates, and other sessile invertebrates should all be considered at risk as the fish matures.

Ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally less likely to be deliberately targeted than sessile organisms. For predictable long-term compatibility, a large fish-only or FOWLR aquarium remains the preferred environment.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with consistent temperature, salinity, and pH. Stable conditions and strong biological filtration are more important than continually adjusting the aquarium to achieve one exact value.

Common Considerations

  • Coloration is actively changing: The juvenile black, white, and sapphire-blue bands gradually disappear as yellow coloration, blue-edged scales, and the characteristic adult face pattern develop.

  • Large adult size: Pomacanthus xanthometopon reaches approximately 15 inches, so long-term aquarium planning must account for the mature fish rather than its transitional sales size.

  • 220-gallon minimum: Adults require substantial swimming room, mature rockwork, and adequate territory.

  • Sponge-rich nutrition is important: Sponge-containing angelfish preparations should be regularly combined with marine algae and varied meaty foods.

  • Not reliably reef safe: Corals, clam mantles, sponges, tunicates, and other sessile invertebrates may be nipped or consumed as the fish matures.
