The Blue Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus cyaneus) is a spectacular saltwater fish admired for its brilliant coloration, graceful fins, and remarkable courtship displays. Mature males feature a beautiful combination of reddish-magenta, turquoise-blue, and vibrant yellow tones, accented by striking blue markings across the face and body. During courtship or territorial displays, males intensify their coloration, revealing an especially vivid turquoise sheen across the head, upper body, and dorsal fin. Their extended fins and rapid swimming movements create a dazzling display of color that makes this species particularly captivating in marine aquariums.
Native to the Western Central Pacific, particularly the tropical waters of Indonesia, the Blue Flasher Wrasse inhabits sheltered coral reefs, rubble-covered slopes, and areas containing a mixture of low-growing corals and algae. In its natural environment, it forms small social groups consisting of a dominant male and multiple females. These active marine fish spend much of their time swimming above reef structures, capturing tiny planktonic organisms drifting through the water column.
With its peaceful temperament, manageable adult size, and excellent coral compatibility, the Blue Flasher Wrasse is a desirable addition to established reef aquariums and peaceful fish-only marine systems. Its energetic swimming behavior and spectacular male displays bring exceptional movement and visual interest to the aquarium. When provided with compatible tankmates, consistent feeding, and a secure aquarium cover, this beautiful wrasse makes an outstanding centerpiece for a peaceful marine community.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 55 Gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Central Pacific, Indonesia, Sulawesi, and Surrounding Islands
Scientific Name: Paracheilinus cyaneus
Tank Requirements
The Blue Flasher Wrasse thrives in a mature, well-established saltwater aquarium featuring ample open swimming space, stable water conditions, and extensive live rock with sheltered resting areas. Although this species reaches approximately 3 inches in length, it is an active swimmer that benefits from generous horizontal space.
A minimum aquarium size of 55 gallons is recommended for long-term housing. Larger aquariums provide additional swimming room and greater flexibility when maintaining compatible wrasses or multiple individuals.
Arrange live rock to create caves, overhangs, narrow crevices, and sheltered areas where the fish can retreat when frightened or rest at night. Unlike sand-burying wrasses, the Blue Flasher Wrasse typically shelters among rockwork rather than burying itself in the substrate.
A sandy or fine crushed coral substrate is suitable, although substrate composition is less important than providing open swimming areas and secure rockwork. Moderate to strong water circulation and good oxygenation are recommended, with calmer areas available near sheltered resting locations.
A tightly fitted aquarium lid or mesh cover is essential. Flasher wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers and may leap from uncovered aquariums when startled, chased, or engaged in rapid courtship displays. Even small openings around equipment and plumbing should be secured.
Provide a consistent lighting schedule and avoid sudden changes in illumination, as abrupt disturbances can cause these active fish to dart rapidly toward the surface.
Diet and Feeding
The Blue Flasher Wrasse is a carnivore and planktivore that naturally feeds on small zooplankton and tiny marine crustaceans suspended in the water column. Its active feeding behavior involves swimming above reef structures while capturing passing food particles.
In captivity, this species generally adapts well to a varied diet of appropriately sized, protein-rich marine foods.
Offer a balanced selection that includes:
-
Frozen mysis shrimp
-
Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp
-
Frozen copepods and other zooplankton
-
Calanus and small marine crustaceans
-
Finely chopped marine shrimp
-
High-quality frozen carnivore blends
-
Small marine pellets and flakes when accepted
Feed two to three times daily, offering small portions appropriate for its compact mouth and active metabolism. Multiple smaller feedings help replicate its natural feeding behavior and ensure consistent nutritional intake.
Because this species frequently captures food drifting through the water column, moderate circulation during feeding can encourage natural hunting behavior. However, ensure that food remains accessible and is not immediately removed by filtration or consumed by faster tankmates.
A mature aquarium with healthy populations of copepods and other planktonic organisms can provide supplemental nutrition, although regular prepared feedings remain essential.
A varied marine-based diet supports healthy coloration, proper body condition, and the brilliant display colors exhibited by mature males.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Blue Flasher Wrasse is a generally peaceful, social species that integrates well into established marine community aquariums. It spends much of its time swimming through the middle and upper portions of the aquarium, occasionally retreating into rockwork when startled.
Suitable tankmates include clownfish, cardinalfish, firefish, peaceful gobies, blennies, anthias, and other nonaggressive marine fish that will not intimidate or outcompete it for food.
This species can also coexist with other peaceful wrasses, including compatible fairy wrasses and certain flasher wrasses, when provided with adequate swimming space and careful introductions.
Although generally peaceful toward unrelated species, mature males may display territorial behavior toward other males, particularly individuals with similar coloration or body shape.
Keeping a single male is recommended for most home aquariums. In sufficiently spacious systems, a compatible group consisting of one male and multiple females may be maintained, allowing natural social interactions and courtship behavior to develop.
Mature males are especially impressive during courtship, rapidly intensifying their coloration and extending their fins while performing quick swimming displays. These behaviors are most likely to occur when compatible females are present.
Avoid housing this species with aggressive dottybacks, large predatory wrasses, aggressive damselfish, or other fish that may harass or intimidate it. Persistent aggression can cause the wrasse to hide excessively, refuse food, or attempt to escape the aquarium.
Providing multiple sheltered areas, ample swimming space, and a peaceful community encourages natural activity and helps the fish display its best coloration.
Reef Compatibility
The Blue Flasher Wrasse is considered reef safe and is an excellent candidate for established coral reef aquariums.
Its natural diet consists primarily of small planktonic organisms rather than coral tissue or ornamental invertebrates. It does not typically consume or damage healthy SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clams, or other sessile reef inhabitants.
Ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other established reef invertebrates are generally safe with this species. While it may consume tiny planktonic crustaceans, this is part of its natural feeding behavior and does not normally present a concern for ornamental reef livestock.
Unlike some larger wrasses, the Blue Flasher Wrasse does not routinely overturn rocks, disturb coral colonies, or dig through the substrate while searching for food.
Its small adult size, peaceful disposition, and active swimming behavior make it particularly attractive for reef aquariums where maintaining compatibility with corals and invertebrates is a priority.
A mature reef system with abundant rockwork, open swimming areas, peaceful tankmates, and a secure lid provides an excellent environment for this colorful species.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
The Blue Flasher Wrasse benefits from stable marine water conditions, efficient biological filtration, and consistent aquarium maintenance. Maintaining excellent water quality and adequate oxygenation is particularly important during acclimation and when introducing the fish into an established community.
Avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or pH. Stable, consistent water parameters are more beneficial than frequent adjustments intended to achieve exact numerical targets.
Common Considerations
-
Exceptional Jumping Risk: Flasher wrasses are highly capable jumpers, especially when startled or performing rapid swimming displays. A tightly fitted aquarium lid or mesh cover with no exposed openings is essential.
-
Spectacular Male Display Coloration: Mature males develop brilliant reddish-magenta and turquoise-blue coloration, with particularly vivid blue highlights during courtship. Females and juveniles display more subdued coloration.
-
Peaceful Community Compatibility: Generally well suited for established reef aquariums containing peaceful marine fish, although aggressive or highly territorial tankmates should be avoided.
-
Frequent Feeding Requirements: Benefits from two to three small daily feedings of high-quality marine-based meaty foods to support its active metabolism and natural plankton-feeding behavior.
-
Social and Territorial Considerations: A single male is recommended for most aquariums. Compatible groups consisting of one male and multiple females may be maintained in larger systems, but multiple males can become territorial toward one another.
