Bellus Angelfish - Male

The male Bellus Angelfish is an elegant saltwater fish with a pale blue-gray to silvery body accented by vivid golden-yellow stripes along the back and midline. Yellow markings around the head and pectoral-fin base, brilliant blue fin margins, blue lips, and elongated streamers on the deeply forked tail complete its refined adult coloration. Males look dramatically different from the boldly black-, white-, and blue-striped females. 

Also known as the Ornate Angelfish or Bellus Lyretail Angelfish, Genicanthus bellus has a localized distribution across the eastern Indian and Pacific oceans, including the Cocos-Keeling Islands, Philippines, Palau, Guam, Tonga, Cook Islands, and Society Islands. It inhabits deep, current-swept outer reef slopes and drop-offs, where it forms social groups and feeds primarily on plankton above the reef. 

Unlike most marine angelfish, the Bellus Angelfish is a midwater planktivore rather than a dedicated coral grazer. Its graceful swimming style, manageable adult size, and dependable coral compatibility make it especially desirable for a large reef aquarium or peaceful fish-only aquarium. Adults reach approximately 7 inches and require generous open swimming space.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature aquarium with a long swimming footprint and broad, unobstructed space through the middle and upper water column. Position live rock along the back and sides to create caves, shaded overhangs, and secure nighttime retreats without restricting the primary swimming lanes. 

Moderate to strong, varied water movement and excellent oxygenation reflect the species’ natural association with current-swept reef drop-offs. Efficient filtration is important because this planktivorous angelfish benefits from several small meals throughout the day. A specialized substrate is not required; reef sand or fine gravel is suitable. 

Bellus Angelfish originate from deeper reef habitats and may initially be uncomfortable under intense lighting. Include shaded areas and allow newly introduced specimens to adjust gradually to bright reef illumination. Use a secure mesh cover because a startled fish may jump. 

Diet and Feeding

The male Bellus Angelfish is primarily a planktivore that captures small drifting organisms in open water. In captivity, offer mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, calanus, finely chopped krill, plankton-based frozen blends, chopped clam or shrimp, and high-quality slow-sinking marine pellets. 

Spirulina-enriched flakes, frozen algae preparations, marine angelfish formulas, and small pieces of nori can provide additional nutritional variety. Allow food to remain suspended in the water column so the fish can feed naturally rather than relying entirely on food that falls to the substrate. 

Feed two to three small portions daily. Newly acclimating males may benefit from more frequent feedings and should be monitored closely to confirm that they are actively eating and maintaining a full body profile. Wild-collected adult males can sometimes be slower to adapt to aquarium foods than juveniles or females. 

Temperament and Tankmates

The Bellus Angelfish is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and is less territorial than many substrate-feeding angelfish. Suitable tankmates include tangs, rabbitfish, butterflyfish, peaceful wrasses, anthias, clownfish, cardinalfish, gobies, and other non-predatory community species. 

A male may be kept alone, with one compatible female, or as the single male in a carefully planned harem. Avoid keeping two males together in the typical home aquarium. Pairs or harems should be introduced carefully—preferably together—and require more space than a single specimen.

This species is a protogynous hermaphrodite: individuals begin as females, and a dominant female may transition into a male when social conditions require it. Do not add another male to an established social group containing a male. 

Reef Compatibility

The Bellus Angelfish is considered reef safe. Its natural feeding strategy centers on plankton in the water column, and it does not normally graze healthy stony corals, soft corals, zoanthids, anemones, clam mantles, or other sessile reef animals.

It is also generally compatible with established ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and clams. Tiny planktonic crustaceans may be consumed as natural prey, but larger ornamental invertebrates are not typically targeted. Secure loose coral fragments, as an active adult may accidentally shift poorly mounted frags while swimming.
