The Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus), also known as the Blue Tang Surgeonfish, is a striking Western Atlantic saltwater fish prized for its rich blue adult coloration and contrasting yellow caudal spine. Juveniles can look dramatically different, often displaying bright yellow coloration before transitioning through intermediate blue-and-yellow phases into the characteristic blue of adulthood.
Native primarily to the tropical and subtropical Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda, Florida region, and south to Brazil, this active marine aquarium fish naturally inhabits coral reefs as well as rocky and seagrass areas. It spends much of the day swimming and grazing on algae. In a spacious, established reef aquarium or fish-only aquarium, the Atlantic Blue Tang provides constant movement while helping graze naturally occurring algae from rock surfaces.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Herbivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda to Brazil
Scientific Name: Acanthurus coeruleus
Tank Requirements
The Atlantic Blue Tang is an active surgeonfish that requires substantial swimming room and should be housed in a large, mature saltwater aquarium. Adults can approach 15 inches in total length, making generous horizontal swimming space especially important for long-term housing.
Provide an open aquascape with plenty of unobstructed swimming area combined with established live rock. Rockwork offers shelter and nighttime resting areas while also providing surfaces for natural algae growth and grazing. Strong filtration, good oxygenation, and moderate to strong water movement are recommended.
Maintain excellent water quality and avoid overcrowding. Like other surgeonfish, this species benefits from a stable, mature aquarium rather than a newly established system. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended.
Diet and Feeding
The Atlantic Blue Tang is primarily herbivorous and naturally spends much of its day grazing algae. Its captive diet should therefore emphasize high-quality marine vegetable matter.
Offer dried marine algae or nori regularly, ideally secured to an algae clip or rock where the fish can graze naturally. Spirulina-based foods, herbivore pellets, and quality frozen preparations formulated for marine herbivores can provide additional variety. Small amounts of mysis shrimp and other nutrient-rich marine foods may also be offered as dietary supplements, but vegetable-based foods should remain the foundation of the diet.
Feed multiple small portions throughout the day when practical, and provide regular access to algae-based foods. A mature aquarium with naturally occurring algae on the rockwork provides additional grazing opportunities.
Temperament and Tankmates
This species is generally active and confident but is best classified as semi-aggressive. Established individuals may become territorial, particularly toward other surgeonfish or species with similar body shapes and feeding habits.
It is typically best to keep one Atlantic Blue Tang per aquarium unless the system is exceptionally large and specifically planned to accommodate multiple surgeonfish. When keeping it with other tang species, provide abundant swimming room, multiple grazing areas, and carefully consider the order in which the fish are introduced.
Suitable tankmates include many appropriately sized reef and fish-only aquarium species that are not excessively aggressive or likely to compete intensely for territory.
Reef Compatibility
The Atlantic Blue Tang is considered reef safe and is generally an excellent candidate for appropriately sized reef aquariums. Its natural feeding behavior is focused primarily on algae rather than corals or ornamental invertebrates.
It is not normally a threat to corals, clams, shrimp, snails, or crabs. Its active swimming habits and eventual adult size, however, mean that reef aquascaping should leave sufficient open space rather than creating a densely packed rock structure.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Consistent, stable conditions are more important than attempting to maintain a single exact value within these ranges. Strong biological filtration, good oxygenation, and routine maintenance are important for long-term health.
Common Considerations
-
Large Adult Size: This species can approach 15 inches and requires substantial swimming space as it matures.
-
Continuous Grazer: Regular access to marine algae and other plant-based foods is important for maintaining proper nutrition.
-
Tang Aggression: Territorial behavior can occur toward other tangs and similarly shaped fish, especially after the Atlantic Blue Tang becomes established.
-
Mature Aquarium Preferred: Established live rock provides valuable grazing surfaces, shelter, and a more suitable environment than a newly established aquarium.
-
Caudal Spine: Like other surgeonfish, it possesses a sharp defensive spine near the base of the tail. Appropriate care should be taken when capturing, transferring, or handling the fish.
