The Arrowhead Basslet (Belonoperca chabanaudi), also known as the Arrowhead Soapfish, is a distinctive predatory saltwater fish admired for its unusual coloration, elongated body, and fascinating cave-dwelling behavior. Its slender body displays a blend of smoky greenish-blue, dark brown, and charcoal tones, accented by intricate black spots and vivid blue markings along the fins. A contrasting yellow patch near the rear dorsal and anal fin region adds a striking touch of color, while its pointed head and large mouth give this species a unique, unmistakably predatory appearance.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, particularly the Coral Sea and surrounding western Pacific reef environments, the Arrowhead Basslet inhabits deeper coral reef slopes, rocky walls, caves, and shaded overhangs. In its natural habitat, it remains closely associated with sheltered reef structures, often hovering near cave entrances or swimming upside down beneath rocky ledges. Its secretive behavior and preference for shaded environments make it especially fascinating to observe in a carefully designed marine aquarium.
The Arrowhead Basslet is an uncommon and highly distinctive addition to established saltwater aquariums. Its unusual swimming behavior, attractive markings, and intriguing predatory instincts make it particularly appealing to experienced marine aquarists seeking something different from traditional community fish. Although it can adapt well to captivity once established, its specialized habitat preferences, territorial tendencies, and appetite for small fish and crustaceans require thoughtful aquarium planning.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 75 Gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive / Predatory
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-Pacific, Coral Sea, and Western Pacific
Scientific Name: Belonoperca chabanaudi
Tank Requirements
The Arrowhead Basslet thrives in a mature, well-established saltwater aquarium featuring extensive live rock, shaded caves, and sheltered overhangs. Unlike highly active open-water swimmers, this species prefers to remain close to rocky structures where it can rest, observe its surroundings, and ambush passing prey.
A minimum aquarium size of 75 gallons is recommended for long-term housing, providing adequate territory for this species, which reaches approximately 6 inches in length. Larger aquariums offer additional space for compatible tankmates and allow more extensive cave systems to be incorporated into the aquascape.
Arrange substantial live rock formations to create deep caves, horizontal overhangs, narrow passages, and shaded vertical surfaces. The Arrowhead Basslet naturally occupies sheltered reef environments and may spend considerable time swimming upside down beneath ledges or hovering near the entrances of caves.
Providing multiple hiding locations is especially important during acclimation, when newly introduced individuals may remain concealed until they feel secure. Open swimming areas should be available near the rockwork to allow the fish to move comfortably between shelters.
Subdued lighting or partially shaded sections of the aquarium are beneficial. Although the species can adapt to conventional reef aquarium lighting, access to darker areas helps replicate its natural habitat and encourages more comfortable behavior.
A sandy or fine crushed coral substrate is suitable, although substrate composition is less important than providing stable rock structures and adequate shelter. Moderate water movement, excellent oxygenation, and efficient biological filtration are recommended.
A securely fitted aquarium lid or mesh cover is advisable, particularly during acclimation or when the fish becomes startled.
Diet and Feeding
The Arrowhead Basslet is a carnivorous predator that naturally feeds on small fish, shrimp, and other reef-dwelling crustaceans. Its relatively large mouth allows it to capture surprisingly substantial prey compared with its slender body size.
In captivity, provide a varied diet of high-quality, protein-rich marine foods, including:
-
Frozen mysis shrimp
-
Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp
-
Chopped shrimp and prawns
-
Finely chopped marine fish flesh
-
Chopped squid and calamari
-
Small pieces of clam and scallop
-
High-quality frozen marine carnivore blends
-
Protein-rich marine pellets when accepted
Feed once or twice daily, offering appropriately sized portions based on the fish's size, activity level, and feeding response.
Newly introduced individuals may initially remain hidden and hesitate to accept prepared foods. Offering frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, or small pieces of marine seafood near the entrance of a preferred cave can help encourage feeding.
Long feeding tongs may be useful for presenting food to individuals that are reluctant to leave their shelters. Once acclimated, many specimens become confident feeders and may emerge readily when food is introduced.
A varied marine-based diet supports healthy coloration, proper body condition, and long-term nutritional balance. Avoid relying exclusively on brine shrimp or freshwater feeder fish, which do not provide an ideal nutritional foundation.
Because this species naturally hunts from concealed locations, providing a quiet feeding environment and minimizing competition from aggressive tankmates can help ensure consistent food intake.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Arrowhead Basslet is a semi-aggressive, predatory species that generally spends much of its time near caves, overhangs, and sheltered rock formations. Although it may appear shy when first introduced, it can become territorial once established and may aggressively defend preferred hiding locations.
Its predatory nature makes careful tankmate selection particularly important. Small fish that can fit inside its mouth may eventually be consumed, even if they initially coexist peacefully.
Suitable tankmates include appropriately sized clownfish, larger wrasses, dwarf angelfish, tangs, and other moderately assertive marine fish that are too large to be considered prey.
Very small gobies, blennies, dartfish, and other delicate marine fish should be avoided because they may be vulnerable to predation or territorial harassment.
The Arrowhead Basslet may also display aggression toward other basslets and similarly shaped cave-dwelling predators, particularly when competing for sheltered rock formations.
Keeping a single specimen is generally recommended for most home aquariums. A confirmed compatible pair may be maintained in a substantially larger system with extensive cave structures and multiple established territories, but compatibility should be carefully monitored.
Avoid housing this species with large predatory groupers, aggressive moray eels, or other powerful predators that may intimidate or consume it.
Providing numerous caves, visual barriers, and separate resting locations helps reduce territorial disputes and encourages natural behavior.
Reef Compatibility
The Arrowhead Basslet is considered reef safe with caution. It does not naturally feed on coral tissue and can coexist with many established SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, and other sessile reef invertebrates.
The primary concern in reef aquariums is its predatory behavior toward small fish and mobile invertebrates. Ornamental shrimp, including cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, and smaller decorative shrimp species, may be hunted and consumed.
Small crabs and other vulnerable crustaceans may also be targeted, particularly when they are small enough to be swallowed.
Snails and larger, well-protected invertebrates are generally less vulnerable, although compatibility with small cleanup crew members cannot be guaranteed.
The Arrowhead Basslet typically remains close to rockwork and does not actively disturb corals while searching for food. Its cave-dwelling behavior can make it an interesting inhabitant of aquariums containing extensive coral structures and shaded rocky areas.
However, reef aquariums containing valuable ornamental shrimp, tiny reef fish, or delicate mobile invertebrates should be carefully evaluated before introducing this species.
With appropriate tankmate selection, abundant shelter, and consistent feeding, the Arrowhead Basslet can be maintained successfully in a mature reef aquarium. Fish-only systems with live rock offer greater flexibility when accommodating its predatory feeding habits.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
The Arrowhead Basslet benefits from stable marine water conditions, efficient biological filtration, and consistent aquarium maintenance. Maintaining excellent water quality is particularly important during acclimation, when the fish may be sensitive to environmental disturbances and changes in its surroundings.
Keep ammonia and nitrite undetectable, control nitrate accumulation, and provide adequate water circulation and oxygenation.
Avoid sudden changes in temperature, salinity, or pH. Stable, consistent water parameters are more beneficial than frequent adjustments intended to achieve exact numerical targets.
Common Considerations
-
Distinctive Cave-Dwelling Behavior: Frequently occupies shaded caves, rocky overhangs, and vertical reef structures. May swim upside down beneath ledges, making it an especially interesting species to observe.
-
Predatory Toward Small Fish and Invertebrates: Possesses a relatively large mouth and may consume small gobies, blennies, ornamental shrimp, and vulnerable crustaceans. Careful tankmate selection is essential.
-
Shy Initial Acclimation: Newly introduced specimens may remain concealed for extended periods. Multiple secure hiding locations, subdued lighting, and a quiet environment help encourage confidence.
-
Territorial Toward Similar Species: May defend preferred caves and sheltered rock formations against other basslets or competing cave-dwelling fish. Keeping a single specimen is generally recommended.
-
Specialized Aquascaping and Feeding: Reaches approximately 6 inches in length and requires an aquarium of at least 75 gallons. Extensive rockwork, shaded shelters, and a varied carnivorous diet are important for successful long-term care.
