Its long, spindly legs and pointed, arrow-shaped head make it instantly recognizable, and it belongs to a fascinating group of crabs known for their unusual appearances and behaviors.

Decorator Crab Behavior
Decorator crabs are among the most interesting and unique crustaceans in the hobby. As their name suggests, they are best known for decorating their bodies with a variety of items, ranging from algae to sponges to even living corals. In their natural habitats, these animals use living decorations as camouflage and protection from potential predators.
Because of this tendency to collect items, decorator crabs may wear anything available to them in your aquarium, including polyps that are not securely fixed to another surface, such as zoanthids and other soft polyps.
Arrow Crab Reef Safe Considerations
Whether this crab is right for your reef depends on your tankmates. Keep these points in mind:
- Loose polyps: secure zoanthids and other soft polyps well, since decorator crabs may pick up anything not firmly attached.
- Small invertebrates: they are widely reported in the hobby to eat bristleworms, and larger individuals may also prey on small shrimp, feather duster worms, and other small, slow-moving invertebrates.
- Small fish: very small or sleeping fish can be at risk as the crab grows, so larger, active tankmates are a safer match.
- One per tank: multiple individuals may fight, so most hobbyists keep a single specimen.
Many reefers keep arrow crabs successfully in mixed reef tanks, but consider this a "reef safe with caution" animal rather than one that is safe with every invertebrate.
Feeding
In the aquarium, this crab acts as a scavenger and will typically pick at leftover meaty foods. If your tank has little leftover food or few pests to hunt, offer small portions of meaty frozen foods near the crab.
Molting
Note: When molting, most decorator crabs will meticulously move decorations from their old carapace onto the new one. For this reason, the immediate removal of molts is NOT recommended.
