Overview:
Stomatella snails (often called “stomatella limpets”) are small, fast-moving herbivorous grazers commonly found in reef aquariums. They do best in mature, stable saltwater systems with plenty of biofilm and microalgae to pick at. Aim for reef-like parameters: temperature 24–26.5°C (75–80°F), salinity 1.024–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, alkalinity 8–10 dKH, and low ammonia/nitrite (0) with nitrate ideally under ~10–20 ppm. Provide live rock, crevices, and shaded surfaces; they hide during bright periods and become more active at night. Moderate flow is fine, but avoid blasting their favorite grazing areas. Like most invertebrates, they are sensitive to sudden changes—acclimate slowly (drip acclimation is recommended) and keep parameters steady.
Compatibility:
These snails are peaceful and reef-safe with corals and most fish. They are ideal with other clean-up crew members like small hermits (with caution), trochus, ceriths, and copepods. Avoid predators: many wrasses (especially larger or hunting species), hawkfish, some dottybacks, pufferfish, triggers, and larger crabs may pick at them. Some hermit crabs may harass them for shells even though stomatella have reduced shells; choose smaller, less aggressive hermits and supply spare shells. Keep them away from strong stinging anemones or aggressive LPS placement where they could be trapped while grazing.
Health and Quarantine:
Stomatella are hardy once established but highly vulnerable to copper and many “medication” tanks—never expose them to copper-based treatments. The most common losses come from acclimation shock, rapid salinity shifts, starvation in sterile tanks, or predation. Observe for normal behavior: nighttime grazing, quick movement when disturbed, and a firm grip on surfaces. Lethargy, repeated falling without righting, or prolonged inactivity can indicate stress, poor water quality, or insufficient food. Quarantine is optional but useful to prevent hitchhikers and to confirm they are active and feeding; use a small, cycled, fishless container with stable salinity, a bit of live rock rubble, and algae/seaweed. Preventive care is stable parameters, careful acclimation, and avoiding all copper or harsh dips.
