Overview:
Red Leg Hermit Crab (often sold as “Red Leg” or “Mexican Red Leg,” typically Clibanarius digueti) is a small marine scavenger best kept in a mature saltwater aquarium where stable salinity and plentiful natural film algae are present. Provide a reef-safe environment with live rock, crevices, and open sand for foraging. Aim for 24–27°C (75–81°F), specific gravity 1.024–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, and low nutrients (ammonia/nitrite 0, nitrate ideally <10–20 ppm). Moderate flow helps oxygenation and keeps detritus suspended for filtration, but include calmer areas so the crab can rest and feed. They regularly change shells, so place a “shell pile” in the tank: several empty, clean marine shells of varied shapes and sizes, with openings slightly larger and smaller than the crab’s current shell. Sudden salinity swings and copper medications are common causes of losses.
Compatibility:
Generally peaceful and reef-safe with corals, but opportunistic. With enough food and spare shells, they are far less likely to harass snails or other hermits. Keep in groups if the tank is large enough; crowding increases shell fights. They can bother very small or weakened snails, especially if shells are scarce. Avoid housing with predators such as triggers, large wrasses, hawkfish, puffers, or crabs that hunt crustaceans. Small, non-aggressive fish and most shrimp are usually fine, though very tiny ornamental shrimp may be at risk during molts or at night. Match tankmates to similar water parameters and provide multiple hiding spots.
Health and Quarantine:
Most issues trace to instability, poor acclimation, or molting stress. Use a slow drip acclimation (45–90 minutes) to match salinity and temperature. Expect periodic molts; a molting crab may hide and refuse food—do not disturb it or pull it from the tank. Signs of trouble include lethargy outside of normal rest, repeated shell dropping, failure to right itself, foul odor (post-mortem), or persistent aggression. Quarantine is recommended in a small, cycled, fishless observation tank with PVC hides, matched salinity, and a few spare shells for 2–4 weeks to watch for parasites and to ensure it is feeding. Never treat with copper; if medication is needed, use invertebrate-safe options and prioritize correcting water quality first. Regular testing, stable top-off to prevent salinity creep, and offering spare shells are the best preventive care.
