Overview:
Ninja Star Snails are small, armored grazers named for their star-like shell points and their habit of tucking into crevices during the day. They do best in mature, stable aquariums where biofilm and algae are consistently available. Provide hard surfaces (rocks, driftwood, dense plants) for grazing and shaded hideouts. Keep water clean and well-oxygenated with gentle to moderate flow. Aim for stable parameters rather than chasing exact numbers: temperature 22–26°C, pH 7.2–8.2, and moderate to high hardness (GH/KH) to support shell growth. Calcium availability matters; use mineral-rich water, crushed coral in the filter, or a dedicated calcium source if shells show thinning or pitting. Tight lids are important—these snails can climb above the waterline.
Compatibility:
Ninja Star Snails are peaceful and ignore fish, shrimp, and plants. Good tankmates include small community fish (tetras, rasboras), livebearers, dwarf cichlids with mild temperaments, and most freshwater shrimp. Avoid snail-eaters and persistent pickers: puffers, many loaches, large gouramis, crayfish, and aggressive cichlids. Even “curious” fish can repeatedly flip them or nip their antennae, leading to stress and infections. Keep them away from assassin snails. Provide multiple hiding spots and some open grazing areas so they aren’t forced into constant contact with tankmates.
Health and Quarantine:
Most issues come from poor shell mineralization, sudden parameter swings, or toxins. Never expose them to copper-based medications or plant fertilizers containing copper; even low levels can be harmful. Monitor shells for white pits, flaking edges, or cracking—these usually signal low hardness, low calcium, or chronically acidic conditions. A separate 2–4 week quarantine is recommended to observe activity, confirm feeding, and prevent introducing hitchhiking parasites or leeches. In quarantine, offer a seasoned rock or sponge from an established tank to supply biofilm. If a snail is inactive, check for odors (a strong foul smell indicates death), ensure it can right itself, and correct water quality first before attempting any “treatments.” Stable, mineral-appropriate water and a food-rich tank prevent most problems.
