Stomatella snails occupy a useful niche in the reef clean-up crew that larger herbivores tend to miss. Their small, flattened profile lets them navigate deep into rockwork, behind corals, and along narrow substrate channels where film algae and micro-algae accumulate. Where turbo or trochus snails work the open surfaces, Stomatella work the gaps.
These snails are primarily nocturnal. During the day they tend to shelter in shaded areas of the rock structure; once the lights go out they become active grazers, moving quickly across surfaces relative to their size. Observing them at night under blue or red lighting is a reliable way to gauge how well they are settling into the system.
One practical advantage of Stomatella in a home reef is their capacity to reproduce without intervention. Given stable water parameters and adequate food in the form of micro-algae, they will breed in the display tank and maintain or grow their population over time. This makes them a long-term, low-maintenance component of a biological clean-up strategy rather than a one-time addition.
Stomatella are generally considered reef-safe and compatible with corals, fish, and other invertebrates. They do best in established aquariums that have some algae growth to support them. Acclimate carefully using a drip method, as with all invertebrate livestock, and avoid introducing them to systems with aggressive or invertebrate-feeding fish.
Overview
Graze. Reproduce. Persist.
Stomatella snails are a practical, self-sustaining addition to the reef clean-up crew, filling the micro-algae grazing role in spaces other snails cannot reach.
Micro-Algae Grazing
- Targets film algae and micro-algae growth
- Reaches tight rockwork crevices larger snails cannot access
- Moves quickly and efficiently across surfaces
Nocturnal Activity
- Most active after lights-out
- Shelters in shaded rock during the day
- Easy to monitor under blue or red night lighting
Self-Sustaining Population
- Reproduces readily in established reef aquariums
- Maintains population without repeated purchase
- Aquacultured by Reef Genetics for sustainable sourcing
