Are Acropora corals hard to keep?

Acropora are the most demanding corals commonly kept, though the difficulty is specific rather than general. They need a mature, stable system with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium, strong turbulent flow, and high light. What actually kills them is variability: an alkalinity swing of even one dKH in a day can trigger tissue loss that spreads across a colony within hours. A tank that holds parameters steady for months can grow acropora well; one that does not will lose them regardless of any other effort.

What is the best Acropora for beginners?

Green slimer (Acropora yongei) is the usual recommendation, along with other fast-growing staghorn types and the hardier milleporas. These tolerate a wider range of conditions, grow quickly enough to show you whether the tank suits them, and are inexpensive enough that losing one is a lesson rather than a setback. Save tenuis, tortuosa, and named collector morphs until you have grown a slimer successfully for six months.

How much light and flow does Acropora need?

High light and strong, turbulent flow. Acropora sit on the upper rockwork under the most intense part of the fixture, and they need water moving vigorously through and around the branches to deliver nutrients and carry away waste. Random or alternating flow works far better than a single direct stream, which abrades tissue on one side while leaving dead spots on the other. Increase light gradually when adding a new frag, since acropora bleach readily under a sudden jump in intensity.

What is STN and RTN in Acropora?

Slow tissue necrosis and rapid tissue necrosis both describe acropora tissue peeling away from the skeleton, leaving bare white bone. STN advances from the base upward over days or weeks; RTN can strip an entire colony in hours. Both usually follow a parameter swing, particularly in alkalinity, or a pest infestation. The response is the same: confirm your parameters, check for red bugs and flatworms, and frag healthy tips off the colony immediately rather than waiting to see whether it stabilises.

How fast does Acropora grow?

Faster than any other stony coral when conditions are right. Staghorn and slimer types can add several inches a year and will outgrow a small tank, while tenuis and tortuosa forms build more slowly but branch more intricately. Growth depends on stable alkalinity and calcium being available continuously, which is why most acropora keepers move to a dosing pump or calcium reactor rather than relying on water changes alone.

What are Acropora corals?

Acropora is the largest genus of stony corals and the one most associated with advanced reefkeeping. Colonies are built from many small polyps over a branching skeleton, with a distinctive axial corallite at the tip of each branch driving extension. They grow faster, color more intensely, and fail more dramatically than any other coral group, which is why a thriving acropora display is treated as the benchmark for a well-run system. They are the most demanding of the SPS corals.

Acropora growth forms

Acros are grouped by how they branch, and the form affects both placement and difficulty:

  • Staghorn and slimer types — open, widely spaced branches, the fastest growing and most forgiving. The right place to start.
  • Tenuis — delicate, flat-topped branching with fine tips, prized for pastel coloration and generally more demanding.
  • Tortuosa and tight-branching morphs — dense, thick branches holding deep blues and purples, slower growing and highly collectible.
  • Tables and plates — horizontal growth spreading into a flat disc, which needs open space and unobstructed light above.

Acropora care: stability above everything

High light, strong turbulent flow, and low nutrients are the usual targets, but stability matters more than any single number. Alkalinity is the parameter to watch: a swing of one dKH within a day can trigger tissue loss across an entire colony. Most successful acropora keepers dose continuously rather than relying on water changes, and test frequently with dependable water testing equipment. Review your reef lighting coverage before adding frags, and raise new pieces into high light gradually rather than placing them at the top on day one.

Pests and tissue loss

Acropora attract pests that other corals do not, and an unexplained decline is often a pest problem rather than a chemistry problem. Red bugs, acropora-eating flatworms, and montipora nudibranchs on neighbouring corals all cause the pale, closed polyps and gradual recession that keepers first blame on parameters. Dip every new frag before it enters the display, inspect branch bases under magnification when a colony stops extending polyps, and treat the whole system rather than a single colony when you find something.
