FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What size tank does a Stars & Stripes Puffer need, and is a 75-gallon tank enough?

A 75-gallon tank is not appropriate for an adult Stars & Stripes Puffer. This species can exceed 18 inches and needs a very large system, typically 180 gallons minimum for a single specimen, with even more room being better because of its body mass and waste output. They are powerful swimmers, need strong filtration, and do best in a tank with open swimming space rather than heavy décor.

Is the Stars & Stripes Puffer reef safe with corals, snails, crabs, and shrimp?

No, it is not reef safe. Stars & Stripes Puffers are opportunistic predators and will usually eat snails, hermit crabs, shrimp, small crabs, and other invertebrates. They may also nip at corals, especially if they associate the reef with feeding. They are best kept in a fish-only system with tankmates that are too large to be eaten and too robust to be bullied.

What should I feed a Stars & Stripes Puffer to keep its beak from overgrowing?

Feed a varied diet of hard-shelled and meaty marine foods. Good staples include clams, mussels, oysters, squid, shrimp, and crabs, along with occasional whole shell-on foods to help wear down the teeth. Their teeth grow continuously, so hard items are important; without them, the beak can overgrow and interfere with eating. Frozen foods alone are usually not enough long term.

Can a Stars & Stripes Puffer live with other puffers or aggressive fish?

Sometimes, but it is risky. Stars & Stripes Puffers are generally bold but can be territorial and may bite tankmates, especially other puffers or similarly shaped fish. They are usually better housed alone or with large, non-nippy, robust tankmates such as big tangs, large angels, groupers, or wrasses, depending on tank size and individual temperament. Avoid small, slow, or fin-nipped species.

Does a Stars & Stripes Puffer inflate often, and is that harmful?

It should not inflate often. Inflation is a stress response used when the fish feels threatened, and repeated inflation can be harmful because it can swallow air, become difficult to sink safely, and risk internal damage. A healthy Stars & Stripes Puffer should be calm, secure, and handled as little as possible. If it inflates frequently, the setup, tankmates, or handling routine needs to be changed immediately.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Stars & Stripes Pufferfish, Arothron hispidus, is a large, charismatic saltwater fish known for its bold pattern and unmistakable pufferfish personality. Its greenish-brown to gray body is covered in contrasting white spots, while pale horizontal bars along the underside create the striped appearance behind its common name. Large eyes, a rounded body, and constantly moving pectoral fins give this species an especially expressive presence in the aquarium.

This widely distributed marine fish occurs throughout much of the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, East Africa, Hawaii, southern Japan, and islands of the central Pacific, with populations also occurring in the tropical eastern Pacific. It inhabits lagoons, reef flats, coastal bays, seagrass areas, sandy rubble zones, and outer reef slopes, where it feeds on a diverse assortment of algae and bottom-dwelling invertebrates.

Reaching approximately 20 inches in length, Arothron hispidus becomes a substantial, heavy-bodied aquarium resident. It is best suited to an exceptionally spacious fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium where its predatory feeding behavior, powerful teeth, and considerable adult size can be properly accommodated.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 250 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: No
Region: Indo-Pacific and tropical Eastern Pacific
Scientific Name: Arothron hispidus

Tank Requirements

The Stars & Stripes Pufferfish requires a very large aquarium with a long footprint and generous open swimming space. Rockwork should be sturdy and arranged to create caves and sheltered resting areas without restricting movement. A sandy substrate works well and reflects many of the coastal and reef habitats occupied by the species in nature.

Good oxygenation and powerful biological and mechanical filtration are especially important. Large puffers consume substantial amounts of food and can produce a significant nutrient load, making efficient filtration and regular aquarium maintenance essential.

Moderate, varied water movement is preferable to excessively forceful flow. Rock structures, equipment, and coral-style decorations should be securely positioned because a large adult may disturb loosely placed items while investigating its surroundings. A secure lid is also recommended.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, Arothron hispidus consumes mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms, worms, sponges, tunicates, corals, algae, and other benthic foods. Captive specimens should receive a varied diet emphasizing nutritious marine foods with appropriate hard components.

Offer foods such as clam, mussel, shrimp, crab, squid, chopped marine seafood, krill, mysis shrimp, and quality frozen preparations. Shell-on shrimp, mussels, clams, and similar foods are particularly valuable because the hard material encourages natural wear of the continuously growing dental plates.

Vegetable matter and marine-algae-based foods can also be incorporated because this species naturally consumes algae and other plant material. Feed appropriately sized portions once or twice daily while avoiding chronic overfeeding.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Stars & Stripes Pufferfish is generally best described as semi-aggressive and should be housed with robust marine fish that are too large to be viewed as prey. Individual temperament varies considerably, and some specimens may become territorial or nip fins as they mature.

Avoid very small fish, slow-moving delicate species, and tankmates with long or easily damaged fins. Suitable companions may include appropriately sized triggers, larger wrasses, groupers, tangs, and other sturdy fish, provided the aquarium offers enough space and the individual temperaments are compatible.

Keeping a single specimen is recommended for most aquariums. Combining multiple large puffers can result in territorial disputes and should only be considered in exceptionally spacious systems.

Reef Compatibility

The Stars & Stripes Pufferfish is not reef safe. Its natural diet includes a wide range of benthic invertebrates, and ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, starfish, worms, and similar animals should all be considered potential food.

Corals, zoanthids, sponges, and other sessile organisms may also be bitten or consumed. This species is therefore far better suited to a fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium than a conventional reef aquarium.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable salinity, temperature, and water chemistry with strong filtration and good oxygenation. Consistency is more important than attempting to maintain a single exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Large Adult Size: Can reach approximately 20 inches and requires substantial swimming and turning space as an adult.

  • Dental Maintenance: Regular hard-shelled marine foods help wear down the continuously growing dental plates.

  • Not Reef Safe: Corals and a broad range of ornamental invertebrates may be eaten or damaged.

  • Heavy Bioload: Large meals and messy feeding behavior require strong filtration and consistent maintenance.

  • Handling: Never intentionally encourage a pufferfish to inflate. Inflation is a defensive stress response, and the fish should be transferred carefully when necessary.
