200-INT Advanced Control - Insump Protein Skimmer

The new and innovative Reef Octopus Regal 200-INT in-sump protein skimmer supplies powerful filtration for aquariums up to 400 gallons where sump space is not limited. It is constructed of high-quality cast acrylic that disassembles completely for cleaning. Its hybrid conical body naturally stabilizes and concentrates the organic-rich foam as it rises.

RODC Skimmer Pump
This Regal skimmer is quipped with a new Reef Octopus controllable Direct Current VarioS-4S pinwheel skimmer pump, the latest variable speed flow technology. It allows for refined control and enhanced performance and efficiency. Most skimmer pumps available to hobbyists are alternating current "AC" pumps (the type of power that comes out of your wall outlet). Direct existing pumps have several key advantages over traditional AC pumps. Most notably, you can control the motor's rotational speed, thus electronically controlling air and water flow rates into the skimmer. Now, the user can have the skimmer process more or less water by pushing a button!!!

In addition to allowing the pump to run at five different speeds, the new VarioS Controller takes the pump to a new level, featuring:

  1. A float switch connection lets you connect a float switch (included in the box) to the controller. This added security feature allows you to shut off the skimmer pump when your waste collector is full or shut off your water pump when your sump water has reached a high or low level. You don't need another module or controller to add a float switch to your system.
  2. Two pause/feed modes will shut off the pump at 15 or 60-minute intervals. These are handy when feeding the tank or conducting regular maintenance, such as a water change.
  3. The best feature of the VarioS controller is… a 0-10v input, which will allow a third-party controller, such as Neptune System's APEX or Reef Angel, to take over the pump and tell it what to do. In this mode, the new VarioS controller becomes an interface between the system controller and the pump, allowing you to create intricate programs using your system controller's native language. This is unprecedented controllability on a skimmer or water pump. You can use your system controller as your DC pump controller!

The VarioS pump features an actual slow startup. It slowly ramps from zero RPM to the full preset speed over approximately 10 seconds.

The pump and controller are connected via a waterproof 3-conductor union. The detachable controller will allow for a simple waterproof union. The volute can rotate to change the pump's output orientation in 90-degree intervals, meaning users can output water vertically (up or down) and horizontally.

How the Regal 200INT compares

Model Pump Rated for Footprint Height Sump water depth
Regal 200INT (this page) VarioS-4S DC, 40 W max Up to 400 gal 14.6 x 9.8 in 23.4 in 7–8.7 in
Regal 200SSS VarioS-4S DC, 25–40 W Up to 400 gal 11.6 x 9.7 in 23.6 in 6–8 in
Classic 200INT Aquatrance 3000s, 35 W Up to 250 gal 14.6 x 10.25 in 24 in 7.5–8.5 in

SSS vs INT: on SSS (space-saving) models the pump sits under the body for a smaller footprint; on INT models it sits beside the body. Regal vs Classic: Regal skimmers run a VarioS DC pump with a controller (5 speeds, 15 or 60-minute feed modes, float switch safety and a 0-10V input), while Classic skimmers run an Aquatrance pinwheel pump with no speed controller.

Not to be confused with: the Classic 200INT, which shares the 14.6 in footprint but runs an Aquatrance 3000s pump with no controller and is rated up to 250 gallons, or the Regal 200SSS, which mounts the VarioS-4S under the body for an 11.6 x 9.7 in footprint.

Regal 200INT 8" Internal Protein Skimmer (VarioS) FAQs

What size tank is the Regal 200INT rated for?

Up to 400 gallons with a light bioload, 300 gallons medium and 200 gallons heavy, excluding the sump.

What is the difference between the Regal 200INT and Classic 200INT?

The Regal 200INT runs a VarioS-4S DC pump with a controller (5 speeds, feed modes, float switch safety and 0-10V input) and is rated up to 400 gallons. The Classic 200INT runs an Aquatrance 3000s pump at 35 W with no speed controller and is rated up to 250 gallons.

How big is the Regal 200INT?

It has an 8" body, a 14.6 x 9.8 in footprint and stands 23.4 in tall. Reef Octopus recommends 7 to 8.7 inches of sump water.

Do protein skimmers remove copepods?

A skimmer can pull out some free-swimming pods, but in an established tank most copepods live in the rock, sand and refugium, so the effect on the population is small.
