The Purple Reef Lobster (Enoplometopus debelius), also called Debelius’ reef lobster or the purple spotted reef lobster, is one of the most colorful lobsters available to saltwater aquarists. Its pinkish-orange body and claws are covered in bold violet spots, making it a standout display animal for a reef or fish-only aquarium.
This reef lobster is a nocturnal scavenger from the Indo-Pacific. It spends the day wedged into a cave or crevice and emerges after dark to forage, so it is most often seen during feeding time or under moonlighting.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Diet: Carnivorous Scavenger
Reef Safe: With caution
Adult Size: Up to about 5 inches
Region: Indo-Pacific
Scientific Name: Enoplometopus debelius
Tank Requirements
Provide an established aquarium with sturdy, well-built rockwork that includes a cave slightly larger than the lobster itself. Reef lobsters rearrange rubble and sand around their dens, so secure the main rock structure before adding one.
Diet and Feeding
Feed meaty foods such as mysis, krill, chopped shrimp, clam, squid, and sinking pellets three to four times per week. Target-feeding near its cave shortly after lights-out works best. Regular feeding also reduces the chance it will hunt tankmates.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Purple Reef Lobster is territorial and will fight with other lobsters, so keep one per tank unless you have a confirmed pair. It may catch small fish that sleep near the substrate and will prey on small shrimp, crabs, and snails.
Good tankmates include medium to large fish such as tangs, angelfish, and larger wrasses. Avoid small gobies, blennies, ornamental shrimp, and hermit crabs, as well as triggerfish, puffers, and groupers that may prey on the lobster.
Reef Compatibility
Consider the Purple Reef Lobster reef safe with caution. It does not eat corals, but it can topple loose frags and will eat small invertebrates. It is best suited to reef tanks without a large cleanup crew or ornamental shrimp.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Drip acclimate slowly and keep parameters stable, especially around molts. Invertebrates are highly sensitive to copper, and copper-treated water or medications should never be added to an aquarium that houses them.
Common Considerations
-
One per tank: Reef lobsters are territorial toward their own kind.
-
Small tankmates are at risk: Small fish, shrimp, crabs, and snails may be eaten.
-
Leave molts alone: The lobster hides while its new shell hardens and may eat the old one for minerals.
-
Nocturnal: Moonlighting is the best way to watch it forage.
