The Coral Beauty Angel (Centropyge bispinosa), also known as the Coral Beauty Angelfish or Twospined Angelfish, is one of the most recognizable dwarf marine angelfish in the aquarium hobby. Its coloration varies naturally, but most specimens display a deep royal blue to violet head and body accented by brilliant orange, red, or golden vertical bars. Electric-blue edging along the dorsal, anal, and tail fins adds even more contrast, making this compact saltwater fish an impressive addition to a well-established marine aquarium.
Native to a broad area of the Indo-Pacific, the Coral Beauty occurs from East Africa east to the Tuamotu Islands, north to the Izu Islands, and south to Lord Howe Island. It inhabits coral-rich lagoon and seaward reef slopes, where it remains close to reef structure and spends much of the day grazing. Adults reach approximately 4–4.5 inches and naturally occur singly or in small social groups.
Hardy by dwarf-angelfish standards and generally quick to accept prepared foods, the Coral Beauty is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for vivid color without the space requirements of a large angelfish. It adapts well to fish-only aquariums and can also be maintained in reef aquariums with caution, as individual fish may nip corals, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates.

Tank Requirements
A mature aquarium of at least 70 gallons is recommended for the Coral Beauty Angel. Although its adult size is relatively compact, this species is an active grazer that establishes a territory around the rockwork and benefits from adequate room to explore.
Provide plenty of established live rock arranged into caves, crevices, overhangs, and passages. The aquascape should offer numerous hiding places while leaving enough open swimming room around the reef structure. Mature rockwork is particularly valuable because it supports natural algae growth and other grazing opportunities throughout the day.
No specialized substrate is required, making sand, crushed coral, or bare-bottom systems suitable when other husbandry needs are met. Moderate water movement, strong filtration, good oxygenation, and stable water quality are ideal. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended, especially during the initial acclimation period.
Diet and Feeding
The Coral Beauty Angel is an omnivorous grazer with a natural diet that includes significant amounts of algae along with small reef-associated foods. Providing both plant-based and marine meaty foods is important for maintaining good body condition and coloration.
Offer Spirulina-based foods, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood, frozen marine blends, and appropriately sized pellets or flakes. Foods formulated specifically for marine angelfish can provide additional dietary variety.
Established live rock allows the fish to graze naturally between meals and is an important part of its captive environment. Feed two to three smaller meals per day when practical.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Coral Beauty Angel is semi-aggressive and may become territorial once established, particularly toward other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped fish. Despite this, it is generally one of the more manageable Centropyge species in a properly sized community aquarium.
Suitable tankmates include clownfish, wrasses, gobies, blennies, tangs, rabbitfish, and other peaceful to moderately assertive saltwater fish. Very timid species should have ample hiding places and enough room to avoid the Coral Beauty's preferred territory.
Keeping a single Coral Beauty is the most straightforward option for most home aquariums. Multiple dwarf angelfish may sometimes be maintained in substantially larger systems with extensive rockwork and separate territories, but aggression should always be anticipated.
Reef Compatibility
The Coral Beauty Angel is reef safe with caution.
Many individuals coexist successfully with corals for long periods, while others may develop a habit of picking at LPS or SPS coral polyps, soft corals, zoanthids, clam mantles, sponges, and other sessile invertebrates. Individual behavior can vary significantly.
Ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally at lower risk than corals and clams. Keeping the fish well fed and providing mature live rock for natural grazing may help reduce unwanted picking, but it cannot guarantee completely reef-safe behavior.
For aquariums containing valuable fleshy corals or clams, the possibility of nipping should be considered before introducing any dwarf angelfish.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable, well-oxygenated seawater and avoid rapid fluctuations in salinity, temperature, pH, or alkalinity. Consistent water quality is more important than continually adjusting parameters to reach one exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Territorial behavior: Established specimens may defend preferred sections of rockwork, especially from other dwarf angelfish.
-
Reef safe with caution: Individual fish may nip corals, clam mantles, sponges, and other sessile invertebrates.
-
Natural grazer: Mature live rock provides valuable algae and grazing surfaces between prepared feedings.
-
Color variation: The balance of blue, purple, orange, red, and yellow can vary considerably between individuals and collection regions.
-
Good dwarf-angelfish candidate: Coral Beauties generally acclimate well and readily accept a varied captive diet when maintained in a mature, properly sized aquarium.
