Blueface Angelfish - Adult

The Adult Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon) is one of the most striking large angelfish available for a marine aquarium. Mature specimens develop an unmistakable yellow face covered with an intricate blue mask, a deep blue body accented by yellow-edged scales, and vibrant yellow coloration through portions of the fins. The dramatic adult pattern is completely different from the juvenile coloration, making a fully transformed Blueface an especially impressive centerpiece fish.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species occurs from the Maldives east to Vanuatu and north into the western Pacific, inhabiting coral-rich lagoons, channels, and protected outer reef slopes. It is commonly found around caves and reef structure, where it feeds primarily on sponges, tunicates, and other encrusting organisms. Adults can reach approximately 15 inches in total length.

With its substantial size, confident temperament, and brilliant coloration, the Blueface Angelfish is best suited to a large, established saltwater aquarium. It makes an exceptional display fish in fish-only and fish-only-with-live-rock systems, while reef aquarium placement requires significant caution because mature individuals may feed on corals and other sessile invertebrates.

Tank Requirements

Provide a large, mature aquarium with extensive live rock arranged to create caves, overhangs, and sheltered retreats. Blueface Angelfish naturally associate with coral-rich habitats and caves, so having secure areas where the fish can retreat is particularly important during acclimation.

At the same time, rockwork should not occupy the entire aquarium. Leave generous open swimming areas for this large, active angelfish. A wide aquarium footprint is preferable for long-term housing because mature specimens require both swimming space and room to establish a territory.

Strong biological filtration, efficient protein skimming, good oxygenation, and moderate to strong water circulation are recommended. No specialized substrate is necessary. A secure cover is also a sensible precaution for any large marine display.

Diet and Feeding

In its natural habitat, the Blueface Angelfish feeds on sponges, tunicates, and other encrusting reef organisms. A varied captive diet is therefore important, and prepared marine angelfish foods containing sponge material should form part of the feeding program.

Offer a mixture of sponge-based frozen preparations, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped clam, mussel, shrimp, squid, and high-quality marine pellets. Spirulina-based foods and sheets of marine algae can also be provided to add vegetable matter and encourage natural grazing behavior.

Feed two to three smaller meals per day when practical. Newly introduced adults may initially be cautious feeders, so providing several appropriate foods and a quiet acclimation period can help encourage a consistent feeding response.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Blueface Angelfish is semi-aggressive and can become increasingly territorial as it settles into an aquarium. Although typically kept as a single centerpiece specimen, its behavior toward other large angelfish varies depending on aquarium size, established territories, and the species involved.

Avoid keeping multiple Blueface Angelfish together except under highly specialized circumstances in extremely large systems. Similar-looking Pomacanthus species may also provoke territorial aggression.

Suitable tankmates generally include medium to large marine fish capable of holding their own without being excessively aggressive. Tangs, rabbitfish, larger wrasses, certain triggerfish, and other robust community species can be appropriate in a sufficiently large aquarium. Very small, timid, or easily intimidated fish may not be ideal companions for an established adult.

Reef Compatibility

The Blueface Angelfish is not considered reliably reef safe. Its natural diet includes sponges, tunicates, and other encrusting organisms, and captive individuals may nip or consume a variety of sessile invertebrates.

Fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates may be particularly vulnerable. SPS corals may sometimes be ignored, but individual behavior varies and no coral should be assumed completely safe.

For aquarists who want predictable coral and invertebrate compatibility, this species is much better suited to a large fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium.
