Overview:
The Pink Pin Cushion Urchin is a small-to-medium grazing sea urchin valued for algae control and constant foraging. It does best in a mature, stable marine aquarium with abundant biofilm, coralline algae, and rockwork to roam. Provide plenty of hiding crevices and firm, stable aquascape; it can wedge into gaps and push loose frags. Typical reef conditions work well: 24–26°C (75–79°F), salinity 1.025–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, and low ammonia/nitrite (always zero). Keep nitrate and phosphate in a reasonable range rather than ultra-sterile, since it relies on natural growth. Strong oxygenation and moderate-to-strong flow help, but ensure it can reach calmer areas to rest. Calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium should be kept steady to support healthy spine and test (shell) condition. Avoid sudden salinity or temperature shifts; slow drip acclimation is important.
Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe with caution. It is safe with most corals, but may dislodge loose frags and can scrape coralline or coral bases while grazing. If underfed, it may sample some soft corals or polyps. It is usually compatible with peaceful fish and most invertebrates, but avoid known urchin predators: many triggerfish, large wrasses, puffers, some large crabs, and certain hawkfish. Keep away from aggressive crabs that may pick at tube feet. It can coexist with other grazers (snails, herbivorous tangs), but competition increases feeding needs.
Health and Quarantine:
Common issues include spine loss, “bald” patches, lethargy, and poor grip—often from unstable salinity, low alkalinity/calcium, starvation, or predation. Copper and many fish medications are toxic; never treat it in a medicated fish system. Quarantine is best done in an invertebrate-only tank with established biofilm and a piece of algae-covered rock, matching display salinity/temperature and providing supplemental seaweed. Observe for damage, parasites, and decline in grip for 2–4 weeks. Prevent problems with stable parameters, regular supplemental feeding, careful handling (avoid exposing it to air if possible), and securing rockwork and frags.
