Derasa Clam (Tridacna derasa) saltwater invertebrate

Derasa Clams are photosynthetic giant clams for mature reef aquariums with stable salinity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, and reef-capable lighting. They are generally considered more forgiving than Maxima clams but grow much larger and need substantial long-term space. Place the clam on stable sand over a flat support or low rock where it cannot topple, provide indirect flow, and allow the mantle to open fully.

A healthy larger Derasa receives much of its energy from light and filters fine suspended material. Very small clams may benefit from appropriate phytoplankton-sized food. Avoid heavy blind feeding and monitor nutrient response.

Peaceful and stationary after settling. It may attach lightly and should never be pulled free. Watch for mantle nipping, pyramidellid snails, gaping, or repeated detachment.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the Derasa Giant Clam

  • Where should I place a Derasa Clam?
Place it on stable sand over a flat support or low rock with room to expand and grow.
  • How much light does it need?
Use reef-capable lighting and confirm intensity with a PAR meter, then acclimate gradually.
  • How large can it grow?
Derasa is one of the largest commonly kept Tridacna species and needs substantial long-term space.
  • Does it need target feeding?
Larger healthy clams rely heavily on light; very small clams may benefit from suitable fine foods.
