Green Chromis — Why Chromis Don't Actually School Long-Term (and What to Do About It)

In our experience, the 'chromis school' is the most oversold idea in saltwater fish selection. It looks textbook for a few months and then unravels. The reason has nothing to do with what most reefkeepers think, disease, jumping, or bad luck, and everything to do with how these fish actually behave once they hit sexual maturity in a closed system.

What 'schooling' really means for reef fish

There is a precise biological distinction between schooling and shoaling that almost every LFS and hobbyist conversation flattens. Schooling fish move with coordinated polarity, every fish points the same direction, turns simultaneously, and responds to threat cues as a single unit. Think of jacks, herring, or anchovies. Shoaling fish simply hang out near each other in loose social aggregations with no coordinated movement. Both behaviors are social, but only true schooling is the choreographed wall of fish you picture when you hear the word.
Most 'schooling' reef fish, including every Chromis species, are actually shoalers. In the wild, you will see clouds of more than a hundred Chromis viridis hovering one to two meters above an Acropora thicket, picking plankton out of the current. The instant a predator slides through, the cloud explodes in every direction and reforms a few seconds later from whoever survived. That looks like schooling to a snorkeler, but it is opportunistic, not polarized. It is closer to a swarm of bees than a tuna school.
The distinction matters because shoaling behavior is structurally fragile in captivity. Schooling instincts are hard-wired and triggered by threat, chromis do not perceive an aquarium as threatening, so the cue that holds wild groups together is simply absent in your tank. What remains is the social aggregation, and that is governed by territory, hierarchy, and access to the best feeding station, all of which are forces that pull groups apart, not together.

What you're sold vs. what actually happens in your tank

Walk into almost any local fish store and you will see chromis sold in groups, often with a sign that promises a 'beautiful shimmering school for your reef.' We have done it ourselves. We sell groups of five and seven chromis to customers every week because, used correctly, they are still one of the most accessible fish for an intermediate reefkeeper. The marketing is not malicious, but it is incomplete.
Here is what actually happens. For the first thirty to ninety days, your group looks exactly like the LFS promised. They feed together, sleep in the same crevice, and cruise in formation through the upper third of the water column. You assume the stocking is dialed in. You start adding corals. You order new SPS frags. You stop counting.
Then around month four to twelve, the numbers quietly drop. You walk past the tank one morning and realize you have not seen the smallest one for a few days. You blame ich, or velvet, or a jumping incident. Most of the time, the fish is dead behind the rocks because it has been pushed into a corner, blocked from food, and stressed into immune collapse by one of the other chromis in the group. Our internal estimate, drawn from aggregated reefkeeping community case reports, is that roughly seventy percent of green chromis groups collapse to a single survivor within eighteen months. The decline is so consistent that we now warn every customer who buys more than two.

The 4 phases of a chromis group collapse

We've cataloged the collapse into four predictable phases. Knowing them is the difference between being blindsided in month nine and intervening in month four.

Phase 1, The honeymoon (0 to 3 months)

The group is tight. Feeding response is unanimous; every fish goes for the same pellet. There are no visible signs of aggression, no chasing, no fin damage, no hiding. Juvenile chromis are functionally pre-territorial. Their gonads are not yet mature and the hormones that drive defense behavior have not switched on. This is the phase that fools everyone, including us, twenty years ago.

Phase 2, Hierarchy formation (3 to 6 months)

Look closer at feeding time. You'll see lateral display posturing, chromis turning sideways to each other with fins fully spread, like flags. There may be brief nipping that you miss if you blink. The largest, boldest fish is starting to occupy the best part of the tank: usually a high-flow, well-lit zone with the cleanest sightlines. Subordinates are starting to feed second, not first.

Phase 3, Open aggression (6 to 12 months)

By this point a dominant has emerged and is actively defending territory. Subordinates are pushed into corners or behind rockwork during the day. The most stressed fish often develops head and lateral line erosion (HLLE), shows ragged trailing edges on its caudal fin, and stops eating in front of the dominant. This is when most hobbyists start noticing problems, but the social damage was locked in months earlier.

Phase 4, The lone survivor (12+ months)

You end up with one chromis, occasionally a bonded male-female pair, and a story you tell yourself about a mystery illness. The dominant fish is now genuinely peaceful, there is no one left to fight. Many of our long-term reefers have a single chromis in their display that has been there for eight, ten, even fifteen years. That is the chromis lifecycle in a tank, played out almost identically across hundreds of systems.

Why captivity breaks the schooling instinct

Three biological drivers explain why a behavior that works for a wild reef shoulder fails in a glass box. First, captivity removes escape vectors. On a real reef, a subordinate chromis can drift fifteen meters down the slope to another coral head and start a new social hierarchy somewhere else. In a six-foot tank, there is nowhere to go. The losing fish stays in line-of-sight of the winning fish twenty-four hours a day, and the dominant fish keeps reinforcing the loss.
Second, sexual maturation in Chromis viridis and most aquarium-sized congeners hits at roughly four to six months in captivity, often earlier than in the wild because feeding is consistent and growth is fast. The same week your group hits its first spawning-readiness threshold is the week the dominant fish starts defending its preferred substrate patch. The shoal turns into a territory in days, and the territory has one owner.
Third, your tank has a single best feeding location, wherever you drop food. Wild plankton arrives in pulses across a huge stretch of reef; captive feeding concentrates competition at one point. Dominants will guard that zone aggressively. Add open rockwork without sightline breaks and you have created the perfect arena for repeated proximity contests. None of this is bad husbandry, it is just physics and biology meeting a small tank.

Group size, the odd-numbers myth

The most repeated piece of advice in the chromis world is 'always keep odd numbers, five or seven, never four or six.' We hear it constantly. It does not hold up under scrutiny. There is no peer-reviewed work supporting the odd-number rule, and our own anecdotal data from years of stocking advice shows no measurable difference between, say, six and seven fish of the same species in the same tank.
The variable that actually matters is critical mass. Below roughly seven fish, aggression concentrates. The dominant has only a handful of targets and works through them one at a time. Above seven to nine, aggression diffuses, there are simply too many subordinates for one fish to police, and a more sustainable pecking order emerges. This is the same principle that makes mbuna cichlids workable in big groups and disastrous in small ones.
Critical mass is also relative to the tank footprint. A group of nine in a four-foot tank collapses faster than a group of seven in a six-foot tank, because territory is two-dimensional. What works (proven workarounds from the reefkeeping community)

We are not in the business of telling reefkeepers there is no path forward. Over the years we have watched four approaches consistently work, in descending order of how reliable they are.

Option A, Keep a single chromis

Unglamorous, but bulletproof. One Chromis viridis in a forty-gallon tank or larger will live eight to fifteen years, will not fight anyone, will eat enthusiastically, and will give you the cobalt-green flicker through your aquascape that you bought it for in the first place. We push this option for any tank under 125 gallons.

Option B, Bonded pair

Sometimes the collapse leaves you with a stable male and female that have paired off. They may even spawn in your tank, releasing demersal eggs onto a substrate patch the male guards. This works, but it is hard to engineer, you cannot reliably sex chromis at purchase. Treat a stable pair as a happy accident, not a stocking plan.

Option C, Seven or more in a six-foot tank

If you have the space, this is the only way to keep a group long-term. Stock seven to twelve fish at the same time (never staggered), provide multiple line-of-sight breaks with rockwork columns or live rock arches, and pair the group with strong dispersed flow. Option D, Substitute a true schooler

If the shimmering school is what you actually want, the answer is usually anthias. They are real social shoalers, they maintain group cohesion long-term, and they look better doing it. The trade-off is feeding frequency and cost, which we cover in detail in our chromis vs anthias comparison.

Species-level variation

Not every Chromis is created equal. Group stability varies dramatically across the genus, and most of what people call 'chromis behavior' is really Chromis viridis behavior. A few species are far easier to keep in groups than the green chromis you'll find in every store.
Chromis viridis (green chromis / blue-green chromis) is the most commonly sold and, paradoxically, the most aggressive in group settings. Chromis vanderbilti (Vanderbilt's chromis) is smaller, comes from deeper reef zones, and holds together meaningfully longer, we consider it the best 'beginner schooler' in the genus. Chromis margaritifer (bicolor chromis) sits in the middle. The genuine peace-keeper is Chromis retrofasciata (black-bar chromis), a small deep-reef species that maintains shoal cohesion for years. Availability is the catch, black-bars show up in WYSIWYG livestock drops occasionally and disappear within days.

Are chromis aggressive?

Yes, but specifically toward other chromis. They are intraspecifically aggressive, meaning they attack their own kind, and that aggression switches on at sexual maturity, around four to six months in a captive system. Most other tankmates are ignored entirely.

How many chromis should I keep together?

One, or seven-plus in a 180-gallon tank or larger with deliberate sightline breaks. The 'magic middle' of three to five fish, the group size most LFS recommend, has the worst long-term survival rate of any option.

Why do my chromis keep disappearing?

It is almost certainly not jumping (unless your tank is open-top in a high-traffic area). Do green chromis school?
