The aggression most reefkeepers notice in chromis is not random. It runs on a biological clock tied to sexual maturation, and it follows a remarkably consistent timeline across tanks. Once you understand the timeline, you can stop blaming yourself for water quality and start making real stocking decisions. The deceptive honeymoon period

For the first sixty to ninety days after introduction, a healthy chromis group is the textbook 'peaceful schooler' that every LFS promises. The fish eat together, sleep stacked in the same crevice, cruise as a tight unit through the upper third of the water column, and never show a fin nip. This phase is real. It is also misleading.
What you are seeing is juvenile behavior. Captive Chromis viridis and most congeners are functionally pre-territorial in their first few months of life. Reproductive hormones — primarily testosterone in males and the territorial signaling that follows — have not switched on yet. With no hormonal drive to defend a patch, there is nothing to fight over. The group acts like a schoolyard before recess.
Veterans in the hobby call this 'the chromis trap.' You add corals, dial in the lights, balance the alkalinity, and assume the stocking is done. The tank looks like the magazine cover. Six months later you are back on the forums trying to figure out why you have lost half your fish.

What changes biologically at month 3-6

Sexual maturation in Chromis viridis hits at roughly four to six months in captivity — sometimes earlier in well-fed systems. The change is not subtle in retrospect, though it is easy to miss in real time. Males develop slightly more vivid colors. Their fins extend marginally. Bodies fill out. The largest fish in the group is suddenly the largest by a noticeable margin.
Hormonally, the switch is binary. Once mature, a male chromis is wired to establish and defend a territory. The wild behavior is to claim a coral head or a patch of substrate where a female will lay demersal eggs. In your tank, the equivalent is the prime real estate: usually the cleanest, highest-flow area with the best food access. The strongest male takes it, the next-strongest tries to take it, and the dominance ladder forms within weeks.
This is identical to wild reef behavior. The difference is escape. On a real reef, losing males disperse to another reef shoulder and try again with a different group of females. In your six-foot tank, the losers stay in line-of-sight of the winner twenty-four hours a day. There is no second territory and no neutral zone. The fight never ends because the geography never lets it.

Behavioral warning signs (in order of appearance)

Aggression onset is not one event — it is a sequence of subtle escalations spread over four to eight weeks. Recognizing them early can buy you time to intervene.
Week one of aggression onset: lateral display posturing during feeding. Two chromis turn sideways to each other with fins fully extended, holding the pose for two to five seconds. There is no contact yet. Most reefers miss this entirely because it looks like normal swimming with extra flair.
Weeks two to three: directed nipping. Watch the trailing edges of caudal fins. The dominant fish keeps a perfect fan-shaped tail; subordinates start showing small notches, then ragged edges, then visible chunks missing. If you cannot tell which fish is which, the one with the intact fins is the one inflicting the damage.
Weeks four to six: the smallest subordinate starts hiding at lights-on. You will see the rest of the group cruise into the open while one fish remains tucked behind rockwork. It will still come out for food, but cautiously and only after the dominants are full. This is the inflection point — most fish that reach this stage do not recover socially.
Week seven and beyond: the hiding fish stops feeding. You will notice a concave belly profile — a visible inward curve along the ventral line from gill plate to anus, where there should be a slight outward bulge. From here, mortality is days to weeks away. The final phase is usually finding the body wedged behind a rock during cleanup or a water change, often with cleanup crew already at work.

Mortality patterns from real tanks

We have aggregated outcome data from roughly two hundred customer and community-reported chromis group reports over the years. The patterns are remarkably consistent. About seventy percent of green chromis groups collapse to a single survivor within eighteen months. The remaining thirty percent either retain a bonded pair, retain three to five fish in tanks of 180 gallons or larger, or — rarely — maintain the original count.
Group of three: typically down to one within six to nine months. Three is the worst possible chromis stocking number in our experience — the dominant has only two targets, can switch between them, and works through both in turn. Group of five: typically down to two or three within nine to twelve months, then down to one or two by month eighteen. Group of seven: better odds, but still about forty percent retain five or more fish at twenty-four months — and only if the tank is six feet or longer.
These numbers should not be interpreted as a discouragement from keeping chromis. They are a discouragement from keeping the wrong chromis stocking. A single chromis is essentially immortal in a stable system — we have customers with green chromis going on twelve years in their displays. The collapse statistics are specifically about group attempts in undersized tanks with the wrong species.

Why this isn't disease (and how to tell)

When you find your first dead chromis, the instinct is to blame disease. This is almost always wrong, but the differential is worth running anyway. Bacterial and parasitic deaths have hallmarks that aggression deaths do not.
Disease deaths tend to affect the whole tank. Multiple fish — often across species — show stress signs simultaneously. Breathing rates change. Color saturation drops. You'll see flashing on rocks, white film, cottony patches, or rapid respiration. Aggression deaths are surgical: only conspecifics are affected, the body shows fin damage but no white patches or excess mucus, and deaths are spaced weeks apart, not days.
If you see white cotton-like patches on a chromis, suspect Brooklynella anatina and get the fish into quarantine immediately. If breathing rates double overnight across multiple fish, suspect an ammonia spike or marine velvet, not aggression. If your only loss is a single chromis with frayed fins, an empty belly, and a body wedged in the rockwork — and the other chromis look fine — that is intraspecific aggression with very high confidence.

The role of tank conditions

Tank conditions amplify or dampen aggression but do not cause it. The hormonal switch flips regardless of how perfect your husbandry is. That said, four levers materially change the outcome.
Tank size. Anything under four feet of length forces constant proximity and accelerates aggression by an estimated thirty to fifty percent. Aquascape. Open, low-rock aquascapes leave constant line of sight, which means constant displays. Sightlines are the single most underused tool in chromis husbandry — building two or three rockwork columns or arches that block visual access between tank ends does more for group stability than swapping species. Flow. Chromis prefer high-flow zones and will fight for them if there is one obvious hotspot. The fix is spreading flow evenly so no single area is the best feeding station. Two medium powerheads on opposite ends usually outperform one large one in the corner.
Tankmates. Dominant chromis rarely bother heterospecifics, but small or timid tankmates — anthias, dartfish, small wrasses — can catch stray chases when they cross a defended zone. Can you reverse the collapse?

The honest answer is rarely. Once a hierarchy has formed and the dominant has begun aggressive defense, the social dynamics are remarkably hard to reset. We have tried most of the available interventions across our own systems and customer tanks, and the results are uneven.
Removing the dominant can work as a short-term fix, but a new dominant takes over within days. The fish that was second-most aggressive moves into the vacated territory and resumes the cycle. Net effect on group survival is minimal — you have changed which fish is doing the killing, not whether killing is happening.
Adding more chromis to dilute aggression almost always backfires. Established dominants treat newcomers as intrusions and kill them within forty-eight hours. We have watched five new chromis added to a 'failing' group of three become five dead chromis by the weekend.
Re-aquascaping temporarily disrupts the territorial map and resets the hierarchy. We have seen this buy two to four weeks of peace before aggression resumes, often with a different dominant. It is useful as a stalling tactic during a tank upgrade, not as a long-term fix.
The only intervention that reliably works is upsizing the tank, restocking simultaneously with seven or more fish of a peaceful species, and building proper sightline breaks. Effectively, you are starting over with everything we recommended you do the first time.

When 'aggression' is something else

Not every chromis interaction is intraspecific warfare. A few normal behaviors look aggressive to a worried reefkeeper and are worth distinguishing.
Spawning behavior. A bonded male and female will defend a small substrate patch where eggs have been laid. This looks aggressive — fast, directed chasing of any fish that approaches the patch — but it is reproductive, time-limited (a few days around the spawn), and rare in captivity. If you see this, count it as a husbandry win.
Cleaner station behavior. Chromis occasionally flash against rocks, looking like they are scratching from parasites. In groups, you may see a fish hold position near a cleaner shrimp or even a cleaner wrasse and let itself be picked over. This is not aggression and is not necessarily disease either — flashing without other parasite signs is often opportunistic.
Newly introduced fish. A chromis that has been in the tank for under seventy-two hours does not know the territory map yet. What looks like 'the new fish is being chased' may simply be the new fish learning where it cannot go. Wait at least three full days before judging the group dynamic.
