The Red Head Goby (Elacatinus puncticulatus) is a striking, peaceful saltwater fish prized for its brilliant red head, vibrant blue and golden facial markings, and delicate, translucent body accented with dark spots. Reaching approximately 2 inches in length, this attractive marine goby brings exceptional color and personality to both nano reef aquariums and larger established marine systems.
Native to the tropical Eastern Pacific, from the Gulf of California to Ecuador, the Red Head Goby inhabits shallow rocky reefs and coral-rich environments. It naturally spends much of its time perched on rocks, resting near crevices, and observing its surroundings. As a facultative cleaner goby, it may occasionally remove external parasites from other fish, adding an interesting behavioral element to the aquarium.
Its compact size, generally peaceful temperament, and excellent reef compatibility make the Red Head Goby a desirable addition to established reef aquariums and peaceful fish-only systems. Once acclimated, this charming species often becomes more confident, displaying its vivid coloration while exploring favorite perches throughout the aquascape.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons Temperament: Peaceful Diet: Carnivore Reef Safe: YesRegion: Eastern Pacific – Gulf of California to Ecuador Scientific Name: Elacatinus puncticulatus
Tank Requirements
The Red Head Goby thrives in a stable, well-established saltwater aquarium with plenty of live rock, small caves, and narrow crevices. A thoughtfully arranged rockscape provides secure hiding places and elevated perches where this species can comfortably observe its surroundings.
Unlike sand-sifting gobies, this species does not require a deep sand bed for burrowing. Its primary habitat consists of rocky surfaces and sheltered reef structures, although a sand substrate can support additional microfauna and contribute to a natural aquarium environment.
Moderate water movement with calmer resting areas is ideal. Because of its small size, strong direct currents should be avoided around preferred perching locations. A securely fitted aquarium lid or fine-mesh screen is strongly recommended, as gobies may jump when startled.
Stable biological filtration, mature rockwork, and appropriately sized tankmates contribute to successful long-term care.
Diet and Feeding
The Red Head Goby is a carnivorous micro-predator that naturally feeds on small crustaceans, zooplankton, and other tiny marine organisms. It may also participate in cleaning interactions with larger fish, occasionally consuming external parasites.
In captivity, provide a varied diet of appropriately sized marine-based foods, including:
-
Frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped if necessary
-
Enriched brine shrimp
-
Copepods and other small marine crustaceans
-
Finely chopped shrimp, clam, and other marine seafood
-
High-quality frozen carnivore preparations
-
Small marine pellets or micro-granules when accepted
Offer one to two small feedings daily, adjusting portions to ensure the goby receives adequate nutrition without excessive waste.
Newly introduced specimens may initially be hesitant feeders. Live copepods or enriched brine shrimp can help stimulate feeding responses, while targeted feeding may be beneficial in aquariums containing more competitive fish.
Although this species may exhibit cleaning behavior, it should never be expected to obtain sufficient nutrition from parasites alone.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Red Head Goby is generally peaceful and spends much of its time resting on rocks, exploring crevices, or hovering just above the aquascape. Its calm disposition makes it particularly suitable for community reef aquariums containing other small, nonaggressive marine fish.
Suitable tankmates include peaceful clownfish, cardinalfish, firefish, small blennies, and other appropriately sized reef fish.
This species can be maintained individually or as a compatible bonded pair. Multiple individuals may display territorial behavior toward one another, particularly in smaller aquariums with limited hiding spaces. Introducing unpaired specimens together should be approached cautiously.
Avoid housing this small goby with large predatory fish, aggressive dottybacks, territorial damselfish, or other species likely to intimidate, harass, or consume it.
When first introduced, the Red Head Goby may remain hidden for several days before gradually becoming more visible and confident.
Reef Compatibility
The Red Head Goby is considered reef safe and is an excellent choice for coral-focused marine aquariums.
It does not normally nip at or consume healthy corals, including SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, or zoanthids. It is also generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, snails, hermit crabs, and other common reef invertebrates.
Its small size and gentle feeding habits allow it to move throughout reef structures without disturbing established coral colonies.
The species primarily consumes tiny planktonic organisms and small crustaceans, so some naturally occurring microfauna may become part of its diet. Care should also be taken when selecting larger predatory crustaceans, which may pose a threat to this small fish.
Its natural tendency to perch among live rock and coral structures makes it especially appealing in detailed reef aquascapes.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Consistent water quality is essential for maintaining the health and coloration of the Red Head Goby. Avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature, salinity, and pH, particularly in smaller aquarium systems where environmental changes can occur more rapidly.
Maintain effective filtration, adequate oxygenation, and regular water changes to promote a stable marine environment.
Common Considerations
-
Small Adult Size: Reaching approximately 2 inches, this species is well suited to smaller established reef aquariums but should not be housed with fish large enough to swallow it.
-
Jumping Risk: A tightly fitted lid or mesh aquarium cover is strongly recommended to prevent accidental escapes.
-
Initial Shyness: Newly introduced specimens may spend considerable time hiding among rockwork before becoming comfortable with their surroundings.
-
Feeding Competition: Because of its small mouth and relatively reserved feeding behavior, ensure adequate food reaches the goby when housed with faster or more aggressive feeders.
-
Territorial Behavior: Although peaceful toward most unrelated fish, individuals may defend preferred resting areas against other Red Head Gobies, especially in confined spaces.
