FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
Is the Railway Goby reef safe?
It is reef safe with caution. The fish does not consume coral tissue or ornamental invertebrates, but its constant sand-sifting can throw substrate onto nearby corals and sessile invertebrates placed close to the sand.
What size aquarium does an adult Railway Goby need?
Plan on at least 30 gallons for an adult, paired with a mature, fine-grained sand bed carrying ample micro-fauna to support its sifting feeding habit. A tight cover is necessary, as this species jumps.
Can I keep more than one Railway Goby together?
Only as an established bonded male and female pair. Individuals are territorial toward conspecifics and other sand-sifting gobies, so a single specimen or a confirmed pair is the safer arrangement.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Railway Goby, also known as the Railway Sleeper Goby, Blacklined Glidergoby, or Twostripe Goby, is an elegant sand-sifting saltwater fish with a pale gray-to-white body crossed by two dark brown, reddish, or orange horizontal stripes. A prominent black blotch marks the first dorsal fin, while mature specimens develop elongated filaments at the upper and lower edges of the tail.
Native to the Indo-West Pacific, Valenciennea helsdingenii ranges from the southern Red Sea and East Africa through Indonesia, north to southern Japan, and south to Australia and New Caledonia. It inhabits sandy, silty, and rubble-covered areas around outer reefs and rocky drop-offs, where it constructs burrows and sifts mouthfuls of substrate for small invertebrates.
Its constant sand-processing behavior makes this peaceful marine aquarium fish especially appealing in a mature reef aquarium or fish-only aquarium with a broad sandy bottom. Although it generally leaves corals alone, its demanding feeding requirements, burrowing activity, and ability to scatter sand make thoughtful aquarium preparation essential.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-West Pacific—from the southern Red Sea and East Africa to Japan, Australia, and New Caledonia
Scientific Name: Valenciennea helsdingenii
This species can reach approximately 10 inches in total length, although a length near 7 inches is more typical. Its long-term aquarium should provide extensive bottom area for burrowing and natural foraging.
Tank Requirements
Provide a mature aquarium with a broad bed of fine, soft sand and several open areas where the goby can sift without repeatedly covering corals. A sand depth of approximately 2–3 inches allows natural digging and burrow construction. Small pieces of coral rubble may be added near potential burrow sites.
Place major rock structures directly on the aquarium bottom or secure them firmly before adding sand. This goby may excavate beneath ledges and rocks, potentially destabilizing aquascaping that rests loosely on the substrate. Caves, low overhangs, and protected entrances should be available near the sand bed.
Maintain moderate, well-dispersed water movement, excellent oxygenation, and dependable filtration. Avoid excessively strong flow across the substrate, which can combine with the fish’s activity to create suspended sand. A tightly fitted lid is essential because sleeper gobies may jump, particularly when newly introduced or startled.
Diet and Feeding
In nature, the Railway Goby consumes small burrowing animals and organic material extracted from mouthfuls of sand. The fish takes substrate into its mouth, separates edible organisms, and expels the remaining sand through its gill openings.
Offer enriched mysis shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clam, scallop, squid, krill, enriched brine shrimp, frozen marine carnivore blends, and small sinking pellets. Distribute food near the bottom so the goby can feed naturally without competing at the surface.
Provide three or four small meals daily, particularly while the fish is acclimating. A mature sand bed supplies valuable supplemental prey but should not be expected to meet the fish’s complete nutritional needs. Monitor body condition closely, as sand-sifting gobies may gradually lose weight when insufficient prepared food reaches the substrate.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Railway Goby is peaceful and usually spends its time hovering near the bottom, maintaining its burrow, or sifting sand. It is best housed with calm community fish that will not intimidate it or consume all available food before it reaches the substrate.
Suitable tankmates include clownfish, cardinalfish, peaceful wrasses, blennies, smaller tangs, rabbitfish, and other nonpredatory reef fish. Avoid aggressive dottybacks, large triggers, groupers, predatory wrasses, and persistent fin-nippers.
This species naturally forms monogamous pairs and may be maintained singly or as an established compatible pair. Avoid adding two unpaired specimens without careful observation, and use caution with other sand-sifting gobies that may compete for the same feeding area and burrow sites.
Reef Compatibility
The Railway Goby is reef safe with caution. It does not normally consume healthy corals, clams, or large ornamental invertebrates. However, it feeds on tiny crustaceans, worms, and other animals living within the sand bed, so populations of beneficial substrate fauna may be reduced.
Its sand-sifting activity can also deposit substrate onto low-growing corals, zoanthids, clams, and coral colonies positioned near the bottom. Leave clear space around its preferred feeding area and periodically remove accumulated sand from sensitive sessile animals. Very small ornamental crustaceans may also be investigated.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable salinity, temperature, pH, and oxygen levels. A mature biological system with consistent nutrient control is preferable to a recently established aquarium. Stability is more important than repeatedly adjusting the water to chase exact numbers.
Common Considerations
-
Frequent feeding required: Natural sand-bed organisms alone may not provide enough nutrition for long-term maintenance.
-
Aquascape stability: Secure rockwork before adding sand because burrowing may undermine loosely positioned structures.
-
Sand displacement: Low corals and clams may be covered as the fish processes and redistributes substrate.
-
Jumping risk: Cover the aquarium securely, including gaps around plumbing and cables.
-
Large adult size: This species may approach 10 inches and requires considerably more bottom area than smaller sleeper gobies.
